I have a GRJ79, since all diesels for Landcruiser are not allowed anymore in Europe (even the new 2.4 is not admitted to date). The GRJ has some difficulty towing or at heavy load on hills/mountains. I live in Belgium/Netherlands mostly flat and then it's okay. On holidays to Austria, Switzerland or other mountainious terrain you must anticipate to have to go back to 4rd, 3rd and sometimes 2nd gear... But it's doable. I like it Toyota is not stressing this engine with turbo's or other chiptuning, so I am planning to leave it this way. Surely the diesel will be better in this domain, but the GRJ generally is a very reliable and durable (and smooth & silent compared to diesel!) engine and less complex to service and repair.

All the guy's I know in the UK that are running 79's with the V8 D4D have without exception had them chipped because from factory the V8 isn't as awesome as you might think....... , especially if you tow with them . Along with a chip or remap they all have also had to fit an HD clutch because the factory spec one is just about good enough for the original power and torque.... most have spent £10-15 K modifying their 79's to be the vehicle they want and how they expect a big V8 to tow .... and also need to rust proof them because from factory they have none
