Another few hours on the drawings checking before sending them over at lunch time. Phoned through and hopefully will have a second prototype this week and then on with production. I'm told I'll have a price on them tomorrow. Should be able to get a price together after that.

Its all coming on a pace now, great stuff

Got second prototype on Friday. And a price. Worked on drawings to alter to be hopefully final draft over this weekend and they are now sent over for punching this week.

I will hopefully have a price sorted by tomorrow evening, hoping to get some confirmed orders so that I can get some made before they shut down for two weeks !!! So watch this space from tomorrow evening!! [emoji4]

Sorry guys, won't be tonight now. Just got in at 8-30 knackered. Will be on it in the morning.

:icon-rolleyes: Another sleepless night, never mind, a good nights sleep and you'll be fine, night night Star.

You still up? get to bed, you need to be fresh to work out our stuff.

Ok here we go.

Landcruiser Gullwing rear window doors.
To fit in place of rear solid glass and re-using existing rubber. (Should fit in place of slide windows with additional rubber and if desired, vent cover plastic trim, bought separately).
Flush finish with rear bodywork.
All aluminium construction 3mm thick.
2x External hinges in black coated zinc casting,
2x Southco C5 sealed compression latches
Internal opening 640 x 340 with rounded corners
Inside flange to attach internal locker (or whatever you desire) 400 x 670
Internal opening seal
Adhesive seal to edge of door
Single gas strut to side closest to rear of vehicle.

Unpainted unprimed bare aluminium (except hinges which come black) £283.50 per single door or £555.28 per pair. Inc VAT and delivery to UK mainland.

Powder coat satin black
£307.50 per single door or £597.50 per pair. Inc VAT and delivery to UK mainland.

For transparency, included in these prices, I would make £35 on a single and £65 on a pair and £5 on top of that for painted. These prices are based on batches of ten

Your thoughts gentlemen please, good, bad or indifferent. Even if it's a comment on my mark up I am open minded. Prices may shift slightly less once under way. Would you be agreeable to a £150 deposit per door for example? A VAT invoice would be included with the goods.

Let me know ASAP please as I'm hoping to start on Thursday 30th all being well.

Thanks for all the effort you've put in but £597 + the cost of rubbers and vents I would have to buy is more that I would pay.

Still intreasted, but would like to see a working prototype before comiting.

I think that this has been an epic build and I most certainly do want gull wings for mine. I would of course too like to see a final version in detail. Naturally.

However, the finished price is pretty much up there with what we could have bought in the first place and the point here was to try and under cut that by some margin. Now, no one should work for free and TBH your profits on this are very modest, so don't concern yourself there. But clearly something in the build is tipping this way over what I feel we all were anticipating. Whether that's the locks, the strut, the hinges, the cutting or the metal itself, they seem very costly before you put your mark up on them. I'm the first to stand up and say 'Hey you guys have no idea what these things cost' so I get that, but in this item I am just not clear what is pushing the base cost so high. I'm not after a blow by blow, but can you tell us just what the big ticket item is in there? There just maybe some way that we can squeeze that and get the price down. I have to say that at £600 per pair, it would be too much for me. You can see from our previous list that the anticipated price was for about £400

Chris

Ok, comments appreciated. I'm happy to go with a working prototype as long as I've got some idea that price is acceptable as I appreciate this is considerably more than I anticipated and price is, of course why this was started in the first place.

Chris, you are right in that the Southco parts are coming in at stupid money as they won't deal with me direct but I have to buy from one of their stockists. £35 per latch plus VAT but I am basing this on 10 of everything per part (if you get my drift).

The 10 off doors and frames are coming out at £800 plus VAT which could just be down to getting a last minute price from the guy as he was retiring. I will look into this further. This does include the cost of the two mild steel prototypes, so the actual doors should be cheaper, but, as I say it wasn't a detailed price. Hence I've allowed £80 per door.

The gas strut is the cheapest part at £4 and the hinges are about £11 for the two again from Southco. The other big bit is welding the parts to the ally which is a ballpark figure of £35 as its down to a bit of trial on the first one and could come down if it goes ok.

All plus VAT of course which kills it.

I have kept my markup deliberately low to try and make them more competitive.

There is some wiggle room here in that I have now found catches on EBay for a lot better price, though unless these are continuously for sale it is difficult to offer them. Leave it with me and I will try and get things better. There is a smaller latch, but it's 10-12 weeks delivery!!!!!

OK all good stuff, but one small mystery there. I must have missed something. Where does VAT fit into this?

Bear in mind we're not all local to each other and don't necessarily understand what each other does, but I make bits and pieces for people and charge them where necessary, but I am not trading. Is this something you are doing as a business SC? I understood you were just like us in respect of being shed-technicians. Or are you saying that the prices that YOU are paying suppliers etc includes VAT? Obviously we can't escape that bit.
