80 series gullwings rear windows

VAT comes in on everything I have to buy in. As multiples off and a project I have to do it through the business and will be charged VAT on everything whether it's through the business or not. Consequently I would supply a VAT receipt in case anyone can claim it through their business. Whatever happens, I get charged the VAT and I have to pass it on.

To be clear here, this is not my main line of business but as multiples would necessarily be a large enough project to have to do it as part of my business.

If I do it privately I would have to do it at cost. Hope this makes sense. I'm probably going to have to do it at cost to get it anywhere near sensible cost wise anyway. [emoji45]

Cool. I gotcha. Obviously you have to pass on any cost as part of the build. No question. What I wasn't sure about was if you were charging VAT on top as a retailer / supplier, as it were.

I had no idea that this product was part of a business undertaking you see. Just though it was you in your shed.

Kind of both Chris. If it were a proper business undertaking then I wouldn't be marking up at that rate. It's just a way of keeping on top of things and using the business to (well at least try to) get better pricing. Though it seems that's not working out too well either.

TBH I don't think the price is so much out of the way it was going to cost over a grand for a pair from OZ and a bit less for some from SA and they were horrid.
By the time you add carriage, vat and import duty gets quite expensive

For me cost is not the main factor, as we know VAT affects everything one way or another... For me they need to look OEM and still remain functional.

Look. I still have night terrors about supplying 20 flat bits of ally to replace the carpet on tailgates!!!

Ok
Revised prices.

Unpainted
Single £257.00
Pair £500

Powder coated satin black
Single £280.50
Pair £540.00

This is with me paying for the prototypes out of my profit and finding some parts a bit cheaper. Also reducing my margin on the pairs.

Looking into rubbers from Amayama Chas, TBH, you could probably get away with not fitting a new plastic vent moulding as the 5mm or so gap could be filled with good black silicone and would sit behind the door and the window rubber anyway. Understand if this wasn't acceptable though.

If anyone wants to collect then you can save courier and packaging at about £25 a pair.

Hmm,

I just searched 'Ally Tailgate'…and now I'm scared.

I was almost at a point of saying 'screw it lets do it' this morning and getting 10 punched without any sort of up front deposit, thank God I didn't as now I read this…

"So that's it. Nothing to show for months of grief for anyone. Let that be a lesson to anyone with future ridiculous notions of doing a group buy."

Guess I should've read that first.…had I known it existed of course.

Now I've done a Chris here and got this far. Hell I've actually contemplated doing these for no profit. Nothing for the week or so's time and effort I've put into these with nothing being straight forward because I chose ally and to do it my way. Just to get them built and done and move on. I would have settled for mine being the payment for my efforts.

Now I can see why there weren't too many wanted these things. Good on those that did put their names down. Thank you.

Is the ghost of the tailgate project hanging over this one with a new 'group buy' from a guy (me) almost none of you know?

One declaration of interest based on seeing a working prototype (nothing wrong in that), is that it? All quiet?

What do I need to do? Tell me?

Ok, so the price is too high, I'll try for laser cutting and see if more can be cut from one sheet.

Also I get that we don't have a working prototype yet, I probably wouldn't buy anything I hadn't seen that wasn't tested either so I'll get one sorted.

Also, I had planned to put a flange (more of a rectangular slip joint really) on the back of mine to take the locker box behind. If I omit this, cost can be lowered, a bit.

Bear with me guys, I'm still on it!! [emoji6][emoji6]

I was just going to use those bonded studs that we found to secure any items to the cover. Just a plan flap over a hole that seals and pops up is all I need. Nowt fancy.

Thing is Chris, it isn't that fancy, not with the external hinges as the cutting still involves complex curves. There is a bit more to it, I'll grant you. But no more than £10 to £20 worth if that per pair. The tricky but is the design which is on me really.

Leave it with me, I'll see what I can do.

For what its worth guys the Starcruiser offered to help me with a CAD drawing for custom parts when i was struggling to find a way to fit Toyota wheels on my lamedrover trailer . I never did see the drawing , instead i collected from him the finished parts at a very reasonable price and so happy was i with it i left a 20 quid tip . I can post the pics he sent me if anyone would like to see them . I hope that boosts confidence if anyone has any doubts .

As I say...... cost is not the be all and end all for me, the quality of the product is worth more. If for whatever reason this does not go ahead I'll probably end up with a set from the USA rather that South Africa, reason being Yoda Teq just look better anything I've seen from South Africa.

Charlie, we can work something out if all else fails. I'm on it!! [emoji6][emoji4]

Sorry about that. Fancy wasn't quite the right word maybe. I appreciate it's a small cost addition, but not something I was planning on ticking if it had been an option. Is what I meant.

Ok, info on window rubbers for anyone that needs them for converting slide windows to Gullwings.

Toyota part number is 62741-60030 at £121.75 per PAIR all in from Toyota UK dealership.

Amayama quote two prices, £25.71 each from UAE or £43.88 from Japan. The former would work out at £70 to £80 for the pair delivered based on two or more pairs ordered and guessing import duty etc. might be less as these things go.

At the higher price, I would order from UK and try for a bulk buy discount. But at the UAE price it would be worth getting a shipment together.

Ok
Revised prices. I made a cock up on the last revised prices only allowing half the catches I need. Still, I will honour that for 7 days after I post a picture of a working prototype and will make the same margin on the version without rear connection flange as shown below.

All prices are plus insured carriage and packing at £25.42 for a pair and £15.13 for a single or collection is fine in which case no carriage.

Singles would need stating LH or RH as viewed by the driver. Note that these are a direct replacement for 80 series rear side windows. Should you have and want to replace the sliding windows, then a rubber is needed for each side, Part number 62741-60030. These are £50.72 each plus VAT from my local Toyota main dealer and £43.88 plus delivery, import duty and VAT from Amayama Japan or £25.71 plus delivery, VAT and import duty from Amayama UAE who have stock for delivery in 2-3 weeks.

The doors and frames themselves, as follows:-

With rear mounting flange for fitting whatever cabinet or locker you want to make and fit.

Unpainted
Single £241.87 I make £19.84
Pair £474.58 I make £32.04

Powder coated satin black
Single £265.37 I make £24.42
Pair £514.58 I make £35.38

Without rear locker mounting flange

Unpainted
Single £217.87 I make £19.84
Pair £426.58 I make £32.04

Powder coated satin black
Single £241.37 I make £24.42
Pair £466.58 I make £35.38

That's as low as I can go. So look out for the photo of the prototype and show your interest below. Delivery is 4-5 weeks in batches at present. No absolute commitment but I would hope (dependent on the prototype) that most will commit to buy.

Please put your name down on the list on the order thread here http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forums/showthread.php?t=55348

Any comments or feedback appreciated on this thread.

Richard

Off to the sheet metal shop today to have the (hopefully) final prototype punched out.

Will do a trial fitting on the truck and if all looks good then it's on to the first batch of ten. [emoji4]
