Has anyone changed their steering box oil ? Not the hydraulic oil but the gear oil.

Is there separate oil Frank? AFAIA its lubricated by the ATF it runs in from the PAS pump. There isn't any hydraulic oil used on a Cruiser as far as I know.
I may well be corrected if I am wrong on the above statement is incorrect.

That's what I thought Andy but in the FWM it says the steering box uses API GL 4 75/90 gear oil. I only read it when looking for something else so I'll double check.

Two corrections from me lol. Yes it is not hydraulic fluid but power steering fluid.

In RM184E on page A-27 it says :-

Power steering fluid
Gearbox................................ATF Dexron 2

Steering gearbox oil................API GL4 SAE 90

I wonder if the bottom one is for non power steering gearboxes ?

You well may be right Frank, but I have never heard of this and could learn something here. If it has separate oil, where does it go in and where do you drain it?

I reckon the gear oil is for the manual steering version. The procedure for checking it is in the section for manual steering. Also if you look at the exploded diagrams there appears to be no fill/bleeder plug on the PS version. The flow diagram for the PS seems to show the gearbox filled with PS fluid. JMO
