A/C Issues - HELP!

Is this the same case with all reman parts like alternators, power steering pumps, etc?

For now, I'll get the one in SA. On my return to the USA, I'll make sure my old one measures up to the new ones available there so I can be sure it'll fit without any worries, and then replace it with something new.

Thanks for the heads up Dave!

Don't know about PS pumps but Dave is right on the AC compressors. Safest is new of known origin like the Sanden one I got from EBay. Alternators and starter motors are generally different in that the gubbins that forms the bulk of the weight gets reused (the stators, rotors and casing) and the windings, com/slip rings and regulator/diodes get replaced. That way you get a reliable unit.

SC, that is very interesting. I used to work in a Ford parts dept and remembered having reman units being sold there. I always thought that everything for the most part was either replaced or completely rebuilt. Maybe in the USA it is that way, but not elsewhere.

Some manufaturers recon units are just brand new in a different box. That gives them 2 bites of the cherry.

Dave´s right. Denso DO NOT supply any parts to air con specialists. They are only obliged to supply parts to say Toyota to whom they supplied the new part so you may get the odd new part from Toyota. There are some pattern parts about.

You may have been offered to have your old one rebuilt. What you end up with is a new cheap Chinese one you could have bought yourself. OR one made out of bits and pieces but the usual failure is a seizure which fails all the internals.

BTW it´s been VERY hot where I´ve been and the 17 has really knocked the heat on the head. In fact after a few minutes with AC on I´ve had to turn the heater slider up a bit.

Glad to hear the 17 is working. I found an technician friend of mine in a different city here in Angola who can get ahold of the seals and such for the front of my 15 style compressor. Given the cost of replacing those parts and regassing will be much cheaper and quicker than my current alternatives, I'll go that route. When I get back to the States, I'll look at replacing it with one of the new LHD units.

This weekend I was driving in some VERY hot terrain and used the A/C. I manually engaged the clutch with a bump of the mallet. Man that A/C was COLD! We've not been using it so as to preserve the compressor until I can replace or repair it. I'm hoping to get it all sorted this week. Will post up as things progress.

You can use a thinner shim behind the clutch to reduce the clearançe, although the coil may be abit weak. The seal didnt look too bad, as there is often a small amount of oil that gets past the seal. Look at any seal and there is often a little lubricant that gets past it, some needs to to actually lubricate the seal otherwise it will run dry and wear out quickly.
