[ADMIN] Future of ELCO - Please read!!

Julian.
vBulletin is your best bet, it does have a 3rd party addin for mailing list
functionality and OK it costs money initially to get the licence but to
maintain it is relatively low cost.
I think in general vBulletin is the best one out there apart from maybe
Invision Power Board but that is more expensive I think - my understanding
is that IPB also has mailing list functionality.
If you could get an old copy of phpBB 2.X then this can work with an addin
called m2f which is a bridge to things like GNU Mailman.
Also Phorum has some inbuilt mailing list functionality however the forum
look and feel isn't great.
Anyway some possibilities and personally I think vBulletin is the way to go.
Cheers
Andy

Hi All,
Thanks for all the responses on and off list so far.
It looks like a merger will result in the loss of the ELCO 'brand' and
also with so many people wanting to stay with a mailing list my gut
reaction now is to step back from a merger.
I'm going to revist the software options for running a combined mailing
list/forum - this would be the best option for keeping ELCO alive and
keep everyone happy.
If any of you have some spare googling time to help find a suitable
platform, please let me know what you find. Lyris used to have a
suitable product years ago and it looks like there are a few others out
there.
If all else fails we could move over to something like Google Groups -
there is an archive up there already, but that doesn't provide the full
forum functionality.
Oh Jon, and if we went for forums I would be keen to insist on people
using real names - using these on a forum is not going to lead to
identity theft :)

Hi Julian,
In another email you say we can still receive the list as a daily digest with
the Google Group, how will this affect members who don't use the digest
facility?

Hi Chas,
Google Groups will give you the same options as you have here as well as the
additional option of being able to read and respond to messages via the web.
