I'm looking at an advanced BORDA course and certificates and Pro Driver Training and Offroad training are looking the most likely. It seems to me that most trainers are very Land Rover centric so before I commit to anything I wanted to ask everybody if there are Land Cruiser specialist BORDA trainers? This would be the two-day course probably over a weekend. I'd be keen to hear what others think about the training in general and the various courses - some are better than others.

I'd be using my own truck. Unfortunately Lincomb looked ideal but JulianV has the truck at the moment and won't be back in time. I saw the LandCruisers-Overland recovery courses which look great, too.

I'd be interested in feedback on particular trainers/courses.

Simon.

To be honest, if you are going to end up using their vehicle it doesn't matter whether it is a Land Rover vehicle or a Land Cruiser. I did mine in a Range Rover Classic V8, just made sure I had an Auto as my Cruiser was Auto. The things you learn are appropriate to any vehicle and having taken my Cruiser around the same course didn't really find any difficulty (apart from the added size compared to the Rangey and the fact that the V8 Rangey had a bit more grunt than my old 80 - and was lighter).

Most of the centres seem to be very Land Rover biased as to be honest most of their customers will potentially be using Land Rover products.

So my view is just book the course and enjoy it, you will learn loads and it will be great fun.

Join a 4x4 response group. You will get the training for a lot less!!

I teach our group up to LANTRA winching standard and will be teaching them up to NTPC standard soon.

But if you really want to do a course a BORDA course don't bother. I did one years ago, got it cheap on ebay and TBH a waster of money if you alreadey drive off road.

Paul

PS 2 of our members/trainers drive Land Cruiser ;)

Paul.

Agree with the point you won't learn much if you are already a frequent off-road driver however from a 4x4 Response perspective it was a piece of paper to prove ability to the user bodies. On top of a few of us doing the BORDA advanced we also did the IOPD assessment which gave us a fully marked certificate which proved our abilities as opposed to just a certificate of attendance. None of us who did the Advanced found any particular difficulties in the course although it was an interesting and fun day out.

With one of the BORDA trainers I've been told that to get the additional IOPD Certificate, I would need to then be assessed at a later date by an Assessor, not the trainer, who would test theory, practical driving and risk assessment skills and takes the best part of a day, possibly carried out at a different venue. It seems like this extra certificate could cost around 200 pounds if pursued. Seemed a lot.

The Hampshire 4x4 Response group tell you drive down a gravel farm track and check your shackles are rated and thats it........ you're a responder.

Yes it is a lot extra, luckily because there were two trainers / assessors, the assessor who didn't do the training did the assessment and we did it the same day so it didn't cost as much.

If you go to the 4x4rw web site there is the NTPC sheet there to down load, this will give you a clue on what is done.

But if I was spending the money again I would not do the BORDA one. I have done the LANTRA winching and will be doingthe NTPC in about 6 weeks time.

Hi Paul H
Had a look at the NTPC assessment sheet and it looks like the list covers the sorts of things it should. However, the NTPC website doesn't make it clear who does the training. They have a list of assessment centres and a large list of general trainers but is there an easy way to work out which of these provide training rather than just assessing? :?: For example who would you be training with in six weeks?
Simon

the test centres will have someone on the books. The tester can not train some one he tests.

Anyone can train.

With lantra the tester can do the training.

I am doing the ntpc in 6 weeks. But i will not be training till after that, but you would need to be assessed by someone else.

Hi
Sounds interesting and useful - I'll check the website of off-road driving certification
Thanks
Renate

I done my BORDA with Ian Wright in Kent - was with LR Disco and done the higher qualification - not worth doing the intermediate if you already drive off road as previously mentioned.

I'd be interested in doing some winch training as would a dozen other mates from another club so if you know of a trainer/assessor please pm or mail me ;)

Can you list what training is required in your branch of 4x4 response please to be a responder?

In some areas none, in our area it is still none, but you need to be assessed. Then there is more training if you want it.
