advice about half shaft

Hi Guys
My rear axle has been leaking diff oil onto the wheel for a while.
Had the mechanic fit new Toy seals and it still leaked.
He said the bar was a little worn and then he had it built up a little but
it still leaks .
So I will be leaving it back to him.
But my question is should I try to get a second hand one or let him build it
up a little more.
Which would be the best option long term, could metal from the built up
piece eventually fall off into the rear diff cogs and wreck the whole thing.
cheers

Wheel bearings are ok?
Jack the wheel up, pull it in and out instead of the rocking it like the
front...if it moves in and out you need to get new wheel bearings pressed on
the shaft.
I will be surprised if the shaft has worn, unless the bearings are/have been
really shot in the past, even then that should not rub on anything as it
bolted to the axle so cannot move up and down or left to right?
Shaft Bent possibly, forcing the seal to be knackered in no time?

Another thought is he could have just been unlucky when installing the seal
or installing the shaft and knocked the spring out of the seal.
A tip is to pack the seal with rubber grease around the spring on the seal,
this helps it stay in place during installation, although you still have to
careful not to knock the seal during installation....
Always fit Toyota seals or metal ones, not the cheapo rubber ones but it
looks like that has been followed...

Ok I will keep replying to myself :)
But my brain keeps ticking sometimes, could it be a blocked breather pipe
that forces oil out of the seal anyone? don't think that would happen but is
it possible in the axle, if under compression then it got to come out
somewhere?
Over filled diff?
I also imagine if there are fragments it would damage the oil seals if it
gets into them or onto the shaft....

Hi John,
The seals over time (particularly if they are non Toyota ones) can wear a
groove in the halfshafts over time.
It is possible to use a welder to build up where the groove is and then use a
lathe to smooth it all out, but it is fiddly and you need it to be really
smooth to avoid wearing away the seal.
What I normally do if the halfshaft is worn is punch it in a little further -
you have a few mm to play with so can drive the seal in to a point where it
isn't touching the worn part of the halfshaft.
It really depends on how he is building it up.
