Hi Guys
Went on another long run today alone motorways and the cruiser stalled again at the tool booth.
I know I hate paying the toll but the cruiser seems to hate them too.
The problem is that once I put it in drive or reverse the engine stalls.
Also the revs have climed to 1200 while in idle compared to about 700.
The rev count is going up and down by 300 while driving and sometimes at idle aswell.
I have driven it for the past week since the last episode around but with no long runs and it seemed to be fine.
But it seems to cause problems when driven at high speed or revs for a period of time.
I can drive it but its a game of keeping the revs up when they want to drop once its put in gear which is tricky to say the least.
Do any any of you have advice other than scrap the cruiser.
Could it be a simple thing like the fuel filter or something else, to check out.
I will have a guy to look at it but any pointers would be great to impower me with the mechanic.
cheers

John.
Mine did this kind of thing for a couple of days last year, scaratched my head or a bit and then found out it was fuel starvation caused by a blocked breather hole in the fuel cap allowing vacuum to build up in the tank. Next time it happens, stop and remove the fuel cap, then replace and see if it clears. If it does then new fuel cap will sort it. I ran one of those temp push on ones

John,
While leaving the fuel cap a bit loose while you are driving may
help the fuel tank breather on the LC is under the car, not in the
cap. Check that it is not blocked.

Hey Clive
Where is it and what do I do if I find it.
It wouldn't be that simple would it.
My thoughts are s--- its the IP again and thats always big money.

The breather for the tank IS in the cap. The is an additional vent for expelling excess air when the tank warms up and the fuel expands - this is a pipe running back from the tank to a filter and one way valve and then it runs into the chassis rail above the rear axle.

So the only possible way air can flow into the system is via the fuel cap
vent Julian? (excluding fault conditions of course)

Yes, that's the case with 80s and I think also 90s like yours.
One of the problems with brimming your tank is that it can lead to the vent in the filler cap getting gummed up.
If you hear a whooshing sound when you remove the filler cap the chances are that the cap is a bit gummed up. If you are careful and watch the spring it is possible to strip the cap down, clean it out, etc. When you do it you can use one of the silicone based dry lube products to lubricate the valve so it opens more easily.
If you are getting the whooshing noise it is worth sorting out because it puts more pressure on your injection pump and can lead to fuel starvation at higher revs (80s struggle with this anyway, but you can counter that by fitting a Walbro pusher pump).

Hi Guys
Had the cruiser out today and its rotten to drive.
Seems to be a drop in power and the revs are jumping even in idle with a
base of about 1100.
Its like I was tipping the trottle on and off.
Will stall when put in D but just manages to take the strain when put in R
so this has be baffled as I though D and R would exert the same amount of
pressure on the engine.
I took the cap off and it made no difference, had a look undeer the bonnet
to see if there would be a sticker to say here is the fault but no noticable
problems with any cables etc.
Put some fuel cleaner in but no change.

Hi John,
Are there any fuel or oil leaks?
Particularly check to see if there is any sweating of fuel around the fuel lines.
When you start it, does pumping the pump on the fuel filter make any difference?
If there aren't any obvious leaks the first thing I would do is change the fuel filter and check to see if there is any crap in there.

Hey Julian
Thanks, pumped and no difference at all.
Engine will rev no problem at all when not in gear, but once I put it in
gear it stalls.
Can't see anything out of the ordinary regarding fuel or any leaks.
Real weird the revs going up and down, I was behind in traffic and the
person in front kept looking as if I was revving with impatience.
Does the fuel filter just screw off like the oil filter, can't remember its
been a while.

Sorry to hear about your further woes John.
Surely if it only stalls when in gear it must be a transmission problem? TC
locking up, or partially locking up?
Am I completely up the wrong tree?
Pete

Hi John
Thanks for your suggestions.
I dont have aircon so not an issue.
Not only is it at higher revs while idle but its jumping revs going from 800
to 1000 or there abouts.
Had a guy intsall a new fuel filter but no change at all and only a little
dirt in it.
Later today he is going to by pass the filter assambly and connect the fuel
lines directly just to see if there is an issue with the diaphram in there.
After that he said I may have to get the injectors tested.
Is there anything else to look for alone the way.
cheers

John,
It sounds as if the engine management system has gone into safe
mode, this is a 'get you home' engine style if the system finds a
serious problem. I had this once when I put the accelerator connection
back on the pump wrongly. Have you had the pump off, or the connector
from the accelerator? Failing that I can suggest that you reset the
system, either take out the control line fuse for a couple of minuets
or disconnect the batteries.

Hi Clive
Does my cruiser really have an engine management system. I thought it was
old style. But I will suggest this aswell to the mechanic later. At least I
have a few things to try before I start thinking its the IP.
Where is the control line fuse, I have never heard of this before.
john 92HDJ 80 1HDT

John,
If your mechanic has had the IP pump off check the connection. On
top of the pump is a spring with the end sticking up, it is this
spring that the throttle turns for more revs. On top of this spring is
a black Nylon cover that rotates to turn the spring. Using logic the
upturned bit of spring fits in a recess in the cover, this is not
correct, the upturned spring sits behind the recess, part in free air.
This was the mistake I made.
If you don't know which is the control fuse just disconnect the batteries.

John,
I've had another think and I may be reffering to the throttle
position sensor. Black and on top of the pump.

Hi John,
Mmmmmm just a thought:
Probably way off as usual, but have you been in any mud recently?
The reason I say this is I wondered what would happen if the radiator on the
front became blocked, doesn't the oil for the Auto run through this at the
bottom?
What would happen if the oil heats up and does it have an auto box
temperature gauge?
Regards
Martin.

Jon,
I have made the mistake mentioned on my HDJ81. Mine is a 1997
model and I do not know what the earlier ones were like but I thought
they all had the TPS on top of the pump.

Hey Guys
Thanks for the imput again.
Mine does not have any management system.
Is there a filter in the IP and if so where is it.
He diconected the filter housing and she ran the same, so this means its not
the filter housing.
I drove it for about 15 miles without filter inline and it ran fine, then we
connected the filter housing and it still runs fine.
So now its fine, untill next time sooner rather than later I think.
He did notice a small inconsistancy with the lever on the top of the IP,
seemed to have a small bit of play in it.
But he likes cruisers and was able to tell me how many are around of the 80
series in the area.
Maybe I have found a guy to work on the cruiser at last.
I will be taking the Walbro pump out of the back of the shed where it has
lay for two years as he said he can fit it, should help and cant hurt.
Maybe the fuel system cleaner I put in is starting to work, other than that
I dont have a clue why it SEEMS to be OK again.
john 92HDJ 80 1HDT

John,
There is a filter in the IP, just inside the inlet port, a very
small mesh filter. Usually if that clogs it is permanent, not on and
off like yours. There is also a filter in the tank on the feed line.

Clive Marks
