Bought swambo an ipad air for crimbo and she has just got around to telling me she thinks there's something wrong with it because her friends say she should be able to connect to wifi anywhere ? This makes no sense to me , as i understand it home internet is just that so she won't be able to use it at work , and roaming devices usually have a dongle or some such so usage can be billed just like a mobile phone . According to Helen the ipad has no slots to do this with . A web search gets millions of confusing results from people complaining about connection problems but i have noted "airport mode" is often mentioned on geek sites ?

Can anyone offer any pointers .

She should be abke to hook uo to any wifi network, she will need to search for networks at work etc and enter the network passcode and then the device will connect each time it sees the network, dont have it on airplane mode cos that switches all wireless signals off.

Same as any laptop then Mick yeah . I guess this means her ipad will be useless on the Romania trip jeez i paid a small fortune for a 64GB only to find out it has less function than the average mobile phone .

It does depend what model you have. Some are just wifi and other are wifi and 3g so you buy a sim card for the ipad and then yes she will be able to get online anywhere so long as she has a signal.

If you are sure you only have the wifi version only then your next best option is to tether your ipad to your smart phone so your ipad uses the phones 3g to get online and you can then access the web anywhere you have 3g.

Hope i have not confused you

She'll be fine with it at my place and any free wifi places on the way.

I'm aiming to have a mobile wifi by the time you get here, but I don't know what the range will be just yet.

It'll come in handy in the truck at any rate, with the little one watching youb videos and my better half skyping her sister in Papua New Guinea. It'll be good for internet mapping too I hope.

It's another toy on offer...:icon-rolleyes:

Yeh unfortunately most of them cannot accept a sim card gor for 3G signal. My wife used hers in hungary though with no problems, plenty of wifi hotspots in europe.

Because of my aversion to touchscreen they all look the same to me so i've only got the price to go on and i think this is it http://www.johnlewis.com/apple-ipad-air-apple-a7-ios-7-9-7-wi-fi-cellular-128gb-space-grey/p669375

I must have fair understanding computers because everyone we know brings there laptops to me when the kids bugger them up and 9 times out of 10 i can fix it by pushing buttons or when that fails i've had some success with a solder iron but i avoid touchscreen like the plague the bloody things are dyslexic so i know nothing about them .

if thats the one then you can put a sim card in with a data bundle allowance for each month and she can go online anywhere. it works just like a big phone only you cant lift it up to your ear and make a call.

watch out if you go abroad as the roaming will hit you hard if you download lots of data through 3g rather than wifi

If it takes a SIM card, I might be able to get her a local pay-as-you-go data card for a reasonable price, I'll make some enquiries.

Right thanks Warren somethings amiss here , there is not a sim slot on this ipad , could it be a built in device ? All but the very cheapest ipads in john lewis have "cellular access" which i assume means 3g etc .

Cellular access AFAIK is SIM, whereas other access is Wi-Fi.

It's either Wi-Fi only or both.

The SIM slot is barely visible don't forget, here a photo of mine...

Yeah its the eject pin hole i've searched for and it doesn't have one . Think i better find the original packaging and compare it to the order details but its not looking good .

dont fret as mentioned you can tether it to you smart phone and its only a few more buttons to press and off you go.

Hows that done Warren by bluetooth ? the ipad has no ports at all !

If it's 64GB Shayne it's not the one you posted the link to.

Warren, how will he tether it to his phone in Romania? Surely it will be pulling data through the roaming data SIM in the phone then, at great expense?

As you may imagine, I'm no expert in IT either...:shifty:

Shayne what phone are you going to use and i will walk you through it.

Yes Clive as i mentioned earlier you need to be careful as the roaming will sting you but the EU is getting better and better as prices come down.

Cheers Warren , she had a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505 until today when i broke the digitizer lcd while replacing the glass screen for the fourth time in as many months . Replacement lcd is on its way but i guess it will have to wait until the phones fixed .

Here we go:

Tab the Menu key and then tap Settings.

Tap Connections then tap More networks.
Tap Tethering & portable hotspot.
Tap Portable WiFi hotspots to turn on.
Tap Ok on the data/battery consumption reminder.
Tap Portable WiFi hotspots (to the left of the On/Off switch), then tap Configure.
You now have the option to change the Network SSID (this is what you will see when trying to connect from another device), the type of security and the password. The password provided is quite long so you may choose to change it to something a little easier to remember.
Once you have finished making the changes tap Save.
You can now search for this hotspot using another device, just select it from the list of available networks and enter the password you created.
Once connected you will be able to see the connected users within the Portable WiFi hotspots menu.

In summary creating a hotspot just means you have told your phone to transmit a wireless signal that your ipad can then find and connect to in order to access the web through the phones 3g/4g or gprs signal.

As mentioned be careful with what you decide to do once you have connected if you go this route as data roaming costs abroad can add up very fast. At the same time you might think that you have only downloaded a couple of emails etc but in the background the ipad has updated a number of apps and finished downloading that movie you had started to download last time you where connected via wifi but then it lost connection.

I would hate for you to return to a huge bill.

Hope this helps and if you get lost let me know

All good stuff Warren, but data roaming bills are scary as you've stated.

It might be safer for me to get a local 3G pay-as-you-go for Shayne's phone, if the iPad is wi-fi only.
