Every time i do a service i think what a crap place the fuel filter is in, especially when the water level sensor wire gets all twisted up...

anyone moved it to a more accessible location?

Only moved mine due to mods but your right the engine bay especially with a lift kit is difficult to work with.

I haven't moved mine but I did add a secondary unit. Well actually a primary unit. I got one of the industrial jobbies with the glass bowl and disposable filter. They fit them to all sorts of machinery. I figured it would filter out filthy fuel and serve as an early warning.

Hmm. Nope. What it did do was limit me to 5omph before it starved the engine. Even with the electric pump running.

So, if someone does move and also replace the unit, let us know what it was and could you get up to speed! I'd like to follow up the idea as it was basically sound. The elements are very cheap. Cheap because there are a million tractors across the world with them fitted and as they don't say 'expedition' on them you can get them anywhere.

I just unplug the water trap sensor before taking the filter off. It's easier to unbolt the mount off the bracket too from memory.

Racor is the only name anyone will use for a primary filter on the boats Chris i use these
Racor 2010PM-OR Fuel Filter Elements (For Racor 500 / 30 Micron) | Box of 12
Part No. 301855-12 but its likely too big for an 80 .

A.S.A.P supplies might be worth a call .

hmm, might just bolt it to the front bumper..

Not Racor. Del something or other.

Tell them what you got and what the problem is and they can usually cross reference and find alternatives - £28 Nanni nah we got identical champion filters here for 3 quid a go !

I think the 12 i ordered above came in at just over 100 quid with vat included .

The "Old Style" filters were mounted on the bulkhead of nearly every car made years ago. I don't see why they would not work with diesel 80's. Many cars just had lift pumps equivalent to that in the 80 injection pump. The filters comprised a removable glass bowl which enabled you to see water and debris in the fuel. There was a gauze on the outlet to stop water and debris from getting through. When the water reached the gauze the lift pump was not strong enough to suck the water through the gauze and the engine stopped. Brilliant non moving part protection.

The Land Rovers had a tube in the fuel filler neck which had a gauze in the bottom to stop water and debris from getting into the tank. if water got to the gauze the filler would overflow forcing you to stop. The 80 lacks this vital and brilliant part.

If you use suspect fuel in an 80 you should use a filter funnel. The surface tension of the water stops it going through the gauze.

Could be worse, LR mount the TD5 filter just behind one of the rear wheels, it gets blasted with stones and mud, perhaps the same designer as the self oiling ECU wiring loom?

TBH given how often it needs to be changed, I am happy to leave it where it is and unplug and lift the filter and mount as one, no drips in the engine bay etc.

Been busy dave? A few people seem to remove the whole thing, can see that makes things easier.

Yep fairly busy, playing catch up at the mo, health issues put me behind.

Removing the whole shooting match is defo the way to go, it seems with most diesel cars it is the way to go.
