Back home from this years coast to coast trip, we went the opposite way starting in the lake district. All met up on the Monday and stayed at a premier inn, gave everyone chance to travel from various locations in the uk.

The usual group plus a mate who's trailer was only ready to roll on the Monday morning! Not fitted out but a good test of it and gained lots of ideas from our set ups

West coast behind us

And the rain came in heavy

Not long later it cleared

80 leading the way

We met the locals
20220518_110637.jpg

Now a change of scenery and the 80 all the way at the back!
So the person who planned the routes and was leading made a cock up! A particular lane going one way you can just get the 80 through, the other way probably not.

Well after incorrectly reading my route I went to what should be the end of that lane. Sent all the smaller vehicles first and it was tight.

Now the 80 would have probably got through but I wasn't willing to risk panel damage, I'll be selling it very shortly and besides I've never willingly risked it that way. I turned round and met up with the other further round.

Now we had camp packed up early and ready to head out
20220519_082303.jpg

Now we hit a problem, when parked he has the trailer jack knifed against the disco so create a living area and locks the Nato hitch to prevent moving around.

Well he forgot to un lock the hitch, set off no problem but first tight corner out of the campsite the leverage snapped the receiver!! The welds didn't go but the steel!!

Back upto the campsite and the farmer got his son out of bed to weld it for us.

We got back on the road and headed to the Yorkshire Dales my home county

To camp we went
20220520_072744.jpg

Disco with trailer jack knifed and fitted with MY awning! I've recently bought it and not fitting to the 80, it's on loan while he decides how to set the trailer up. Only 5 mins from me so I know where it is

More cooking at camp

We did some more lanes and the next lane can be a fun one,
There's a particular section and the picture below shows how I drive up it, minimal fuss, no wheel spin and straight up. Have diff locks so will use them
20220521_100910.jpg

Now at the time I took this photo there was a bang, landed under power and looks to have broken the front diff!!
20220520_104901.jpg

Jeep came up after the 80 had to pull the broken disco up, I had to reverse down to get the diso up.
Pics don't do this lane justice
20220520_111013.jpg

Off the lane and tools out.
We got into rwd and driveable, as we were an hour from home he drove home to get another vehicle, plus needed to get the trailer

We continued while the discovery limped home

20220520_133522.jpg

At this point we are missing the other diso too!! He was having trouble selecting low box so decided to head to the campsite rather then risk a problem

20220520_133628.jpg

We did a couple more lanes then headed back to camp,
20220520_151528.jpg

We had a table booked at a local restaurant as we like to do a group sit down meal

20220520_191809.jpg

All group members present and correct even with a vehicle change
20220520_194907.jpg

Final day was today, leaving the Dales to head over the moors

Now no discos, lad with the trailer used his standard D3 to get the trailer home, lad with low box issues decided heading home the best option

We got to the end of the lanes in the Dales and ready to cross to the moors.

Plan was as we cross the A1M lad from north London (p38 rangey) was going to head home, the rest had accommodation booked on the east coast near the route end.

Well it didn't go to plan, one of the lads fell ill and wasn't feeling great.

As group leader and trip organiser I called it done, not worth it for the last few lanes across the moors all for a picture heading to the coast.

They headed off to the accommodation on the road which was 90 mins rather then a 4 hour laning route. Got there all ok.

I headed home and got unpacked, quick jet wash ready to clean up properly, remove a few items then the 80 will be for sale!!

All I can say is what a trip to end my time with the mighty 80.
It's such a fantastic vehicle and I will be sad to see it go, if I keep it and store it it'll be a waste of it. My usage and needs have changed.

Well the poorly disco is stripped down to reveal what we suspected on the road side, one broken front diff.

Was that Ribblehead Viaduct, heading up the road towards Dent Station?

I’ll say nothing of the retirees. Best 4x4x far you know!!

Yes mate it's Ribblehead viaduct.
Such a great scenic road and just had to put it in the route.

It was a shame with the retirees tbh, the low box issue wasn't engaging properly, hopefully something simple to sort.

The diff, well can't even manage a little rocky cross axle haha.

At least and importantly made it for a curry! Also gave our chat group a new photo haha.
Luckily being close to home made it less grief.

Great trip by the look of things, and is on my to do list at some point in time

Visited Ribblehead a few years ago ‘by accident’. Quite fabulous if you catch it with a steam train going across.

what always amazes me is, no matter where in the world you happen to be laning. you always find the wensleydale creamery..

Yeah funny how that seems to happen :tearsofjoy: hopefully I'll be able to teach the Hilux to find it's way there too

Great write up, lots of photos :)

Is this a well known route?

Great photos. What do you mean by the guy locked his nato hitch? Was this to stop it rotating?

It's my route that I planned out. There's some routes out there that are more direct.

Yes when parked up at camp he jackknifed the trailer to make a living area, locked the nato to stop it rotating as the trailer was moving around a bit, forgot to unlock, it was at an angle.

Trailer now has legs for when parked so won't have to be hitched (it was only ready to go on the morning we set off from York to the Lakes! Didn't have legs)

I have never had mine moving with the hitch free to rotate. I will certainly look into this

Yeah definitely worth making sure it's free and as it should be. It was the maiden voyage and had done quite a few technical lanes, 1 simple oversight at the campsite could have been a disaster. We were luckily still on the site.

Interestingly the next big trip we do will look quite different, the obvious one of a Hilux leading the group.

The other being multiple trailers!!
There's the 1 in the pics which is being further built now and improved.

2 more have been started and a 3rd is collecting parts!

Do they need any bits? I have plenty to get rid of including a disc braked Sankey. Water tanks pump, fridges drawers etc

I've put it on our group chat, see what people are needing and I'll let you know
