[Cv Seal] and how not to do a front axle repack +pics

John,
If the seal is gone (as it was on mine too but didn't drip as much just gook
on the outside ball at the time) then u will need to take the hub off as its
likely the inner oil seal. This seals the oil in the axle from coming out
into the wheel area. U may have a damaged spindle (as I had) but unlikely if
it has been maintained well. It depends on 'why' its leaking.
If u can't fix it soon I'd check your front diff oil level and top up. Also
loosen the square plug on the knuckle housing and stick a pencil or
screwdriver in there and see how much grease in there. I'd give it lots a
squirts with your grease gun and ensure plenty put in. Some belittle these
as doing much good but to me at least it can't do any harm.
I just redid all my front axle and my wheel has been loose a few times
(warning sign) and just would retighten the locknuts and fine again for
awhile. I'm on 120K now and redid mine last time in Scotland at 60K (see pic
in the cold and no garage etc.). However the mistake I made was when
replacing the bearings I did NOT replace the races as they seemed all nice
and clean and fine. Big mistake - the races have to be replaced with the
bearings. This lead to my loose wheel issue and having bad alingment (which
lead to outside wear on my tires which are now shot) also caused issues
(over time - as at the time it drove great - just wearing down the tires
into its own groove). Anyway turned out both spindles were damaged and
needed replacing (this was the reason it leaked as they wouldn't seal
probably).
What a pain and could easily have been averted if I had replaced the races
at the same time ! Duh!
Learning more from my mistakes :)

Hi anthony
Thanks for your reply, you are cheeky and thats what I was thinking cause by
the time Toyota get the seal in then try to fit me in their workshop the
test will be over and done with. How much fluid is in there and can you top
it up, or do you have to take every thing apart starting with the wheel of
course. There is a filler knob on the top is that where you could put some
more fluid in or is this stuff from aroung the wheel bearing and the CV
itself.

[Cv Seal] [ chat]

Hi Lal
Thanks for the info on the CV, its exactly the same as in the picture you
sent. When do you plan to move back over to this wet place although we had a
really nice sunny day here today. Im paying about 700 euro for comp on the
80 while I still feel is high, what would it cost over there.
Is that the same 80 you have with you at the moment with the extra bits you
have added since then of course. I cant believe that you would leave some
where sunny with all that open country to play in to come back here.
Thanks

Lal,
I have a similar problem with the outer bearings on one side of my rear
axle I have packed it with locktite for the time being, but want to
check them over Easter.
I want to try to avoid having to replace the axle at the moment.
