Hi Darrin,
Tell us more about your upcoming sahara project! Aren't you supposed
to be in Mongolia now?
Bought your DVD(great stuff) some time ago. I am still in awe of your
self-filming techniques. You must have strong arms ;-)
Cheers,
Fred

Hey Fred,
Sadly, I've given up telling people my plans, as they have had a
recent habit of then falling completely apart. As the newly purchased
HJ60 has only just completed 200 miles and broken it's water pump as
well as chucking litres of oil out of the bottom of the engine, I'm
going to withdraw any mention of the Sahara and going to it in the
HJ60. It's for shopping at Tesco's. Nothing else. It's not leaving
the M25.
That aside, I was also looking at running some unique and interesting
tours in Morocco this winter - Toyota mechanics get a discount if
anybody is interested ;-)
Cheers, Darrin

So you managed to find a Toyota that behaves like a Landrover ;-) A
rare find that is! ;-)
I hope it works out between you and the 60. It's a great car!
See you on the road!
Cheers,
Fred

I was talking into trying one out by a very experienced Sahara type
who has used many Toyo's - I actually bought it off him as he decided
he wanted a Hilux instead - but I suspect that the better overland
ones are starting to come to the end of their reliable lives and will
start to behave like Land Rovers as you say ;-) (That and I don't
have the money for a Troopie which is what I really want)
I'll get the oil leak looked in to tomorrow and then see how it goes
over summer before deciding on the landys & 60's fate...

I'm not sure I have the energy or expenses to kit out another vehicle
- not until I feel that I've got my moneys worth from the first one
anyway! ;-)

A lot of 60s that appear for sale have had a battering - certainly the ones
I have seen. I was close to buying one before I went for my current 80 which
with the benefit of hindsight was a wise move. Troopies are great but have
their faults and as my car has to be my UK means of transport, the 80 is a
great compromise. Great when fully loaded and heading south but also great
fun to hurl around London etc.
Whatever happens hope it doesn't out you off the marque. Would take a lot to
get back into a LR again.

Well, the 60 is a lot of car for =A31,000, and an 80 or troopie was too far up the ladder financially for what might just be a few months of
fun and a one off project, so I thought I'd have a go ;-)
If I get to Oz as my longer term plans are vaguely pointing to, I'll
look into a troopie there I think...?

Hi Malcolm,
Either a HJZ75 or a HJZ78, but neither is possible right now
financially ;-)

The 75's are getting "affordable" by now, you can get them for about
10.000=80 on the mainland. But I believe they are a hard find in the UK.
It's still a lot of money, but you get a lot of car in return. I am
ofcourse (very) biased... :)
If you're heading for Oz anyway, you'd be better of buying one there,
lots and lots cheaper + they are better spec'ed.
Cheers,
Fred

I was going to say impossible to find in the UK or like "hens teeth" but no doubt if I do there would be one for sale near me. Just one of the strange things in life, why Toyota UK didn't sell more (any?) 70 series.

It's my understanding that the troopies don't comply with the UK's
safety standards any longer? Can't remember where I read this
though....
If true, I can't for the life of me understand how a Land Rover can
still comply with the regulations! I've seen pictures of both Landy's
and Troopies that rolled, and if I had the choice, I'd prefer to have
been in the Troopie...

Could be safety, also if the troopie has more seats it might be in a
different licence class, like a minibus which is more expensive to licence
and has a stricter MOT test, perhaps different approvals?
UK is not particularly tough on safety requirements, unlike the US. I was
told Land Rover can not sell Defenders in the US because of issues with air
bags etc.
Could just be Toyota UK who, never fully introduced 40 series (sold well in
Ireland?), introduced 55 in 1975 just as inflation went through the roof and
the Range Rover took hold with those that had money, don't know much about
60 series sales but can't have been many, few on the roads, 70 series?, sold
80, 100 and 120 but very few SWB available, finally no news on FJC here or
Europe?

Darrin, vehicle age is not always the reason for reliability problems.
If it is a problem, it's only because there are less vehicles around
that could be donors of cheaper parts, so you have to buy new parts
instead of cheaper second hand bits.
If Landcruisers play faul with you, it's because of the quality of
maintenance. Landrovers are crap by design so even best maintenance
won't change that. Ask me how I know.
