Diesel Fueling?

G

Hi all,
On Sunday I'm off to Iceland for three weeks, which should be fun. I'm
just doing a bit of last minute tweaking of things and would like to
turn the fueling down a bit as the fuel consumption is high, =B113 mpg,
and it's smoking a lot which I suspect is over-fueling.
I'm a lot more familiar with petrol engines than diesel, and so have a question:
If I turn down the fueling can I turn it down too far and cause
overheating, burnt valves etc the way a petrol engine does if the
mixture is too lean?
Or does the engine just not get enough fuel so there is less power?
Thanks,

Fix the turbo to put in more air, where the fuel is unburnt at the moment.
The extra power will also =3D better consumption.

Hi Darren,
I've got an intercooler, and when it was installed the turbo boost was
turned up until the light almost comes on when you drive hard. The
boost is controlled by putting a T-piece in the pressure line that
controls the waste gate. A small bleed valve on one arm of the T then
allows adjustment of turbo boost.
You've just made me think of something worth checking - maybe the
bleed valve is blocked or needs adjusting, I'll go check that first
before I mess with the fueling. Thanks for your swift reply!
Cheers,

No problem.
Next thing would be put the light on the lower boost side of the adjuster,
So it doesn=92t come on, and run some more boost ))

As Darren said no problem with going lean on diesel, oposite to
petrol, infact the additional air will also keep your exhaust gas
temps down.

That's why I'm reluctant to relocate the little red light :)
The best I ever had a diesel go was when I quit smoking (60 a day to
nothing overnight). I got a bit confused, forgot what car I was in,
and filled an Opal Vectra diesel up with petrol (from empty, a whole
tank). It ran normally for about a mile, then suddenly went REALLY
quick but only for a few yards. Long enough to scare the sh*t out of
me though, I nearly drove into the back of the car in front.
Wish they'd always go like that....

Hi Andy,
I once put a whole tank of unleaded in my cruiser, it drove OK for about half a
mile then sputtered and cut out and eventually came to a halt and wouldn't start
again, cost me 200 squids to get recovered and the tank drained.

Could be worse. My wife did it twice to her Vauxhall Zafira. First time it came back to life OK, 2nd time it coughed and spluttered a bit but eventually revived after about 100 miles of rough running ...
... but then when they serviced it a few months later and replaced the fuel filter a bit of air got into the injection pump, and that was that.
Cost of new pump was greater than value of car, so we had to get a "new" car. Cost rather more that =A3200!
You can get an insert for about =A325 to go into the fuel filler that won't let you fill with a petrol nozzle.

Hi Christopher,
Actually I have done it twice as well, in France on the way back to the UK from
Morocco I topped up the tank from about two thirds full. The Cruiser kept
running, but erratically, sometimes stalling completely, I found by pumping the
primer I was able to get it running again, it would run for a couple of miles
before cutting out again although sometimes it would only run for a few yards, I
just kept topping up with diesel as soon as the fuel gauge dropped and it got
back to normal after a 200 miles or so.

Cruiser =3D Japanese engineering
Oldish injection pump with looser tolerances
Designed for 3rd world conditions
Can be primed with a simple push
Zafira =3D German engineering
Y2K Inj Pump with tolerances & finishes for low sulphur diesel
Designed for European conditions
Has to self-prime
The "new" car has a high-pressure common-rail pump, and goes like the
clappers, I wish the TLC had that sort of oomph. But apparently if you
put petrol into one of those it is curtains!
Given how common the problem is you'd think there would be different
shaped nozzles or something, wouldn't you?
Having had diesels for so many years I really have to concentrate when
filling up the little (petrol) Fiat Panda I got for my daughters. (Which
is currently on its 3rd front bumper in 18 months, I'm getting quite
good at fitting them. Daughters #1 and #2 are currently on full
licences, #3 has her test coming up in September...)

Not good dear heart, not good at all. I nearly put diesel in a petrol
engine once but remembered just in time; my understanding its not as bad as
the other way around, but I aint going to wait to find out...
I'm on biodiesel now - there is just one supplier here in Bristol. Its not
all biodiesel, obviously, there doesn't appear to be that much a different
in driving, but that is only because it's a mixture of dino juice and plant
juice.
I'm in the process of getting miseln some contracted work overseas in Egypt
