Diffs and ranges

The rear and front diffs do not seems to work, or at least I don't get
lights on the dash or hear any whirring noises when I turn the dial.
I can see that I could get the car on a hoist and I could get a volt meter
and I could take the dash off; but my real question is where do I go to get
this fixed? I don't mind spending some money on it if it works at the end.
I am concerned that a mechanic will not understand the problem, tell me what
is wrong when they have no idea what is wrong, replace something that is not
broken and return the car without having fixed it telling me that something
else must have gone wrong.
Any suggestions?

Tony,
I can't help with information if there's a landcruiser specialist near
Bristol, but I can tell you whom' you should avoid - Joe Boatwright i
Pontyberem near Llanelli. Also, avoid LC main dealers, who in most
cases send their work down to various nameless workshops in industrial
estates and still charge you as if they did it themselves, but they
hardly ever check if the job was done accoring to the book.
If there are any LC specialists in this country, it would probably be
http://www.footloose4x4.com/ in Peterborough. Not cheap but have a
good track record.
If you wanted do it yourself, you could do worse than getting the
Factory Service Manual which contains all the diagnostics you'll ever
need. Once you know what went wrong it will be easier to decide if you
can fix it on your own or need specialist help.

Still trying to find a source for the manuals... Yet another question I
know...
Also to say that Footloose are good. They have one fitter, Graham who can
make anything and fix most.

Hey roman
You have the gift of making everything appear very easy and straight forward
to repair, replace etc. Its like the time I went up to Mik in Mayo here in
Ireland and he knew what to do and made taking apart and replacing the inner
seal on the diff seem easy and he didn't even have any bits left over unlike
if I did it. I very much agree with your attitude and that of others to push
people like me, its just we do get nervous and can be very unsure of things,
it all boils down to lack of mecanical confidence. Your not coming over to
Ireland any time and WE could take the cruiser apart and YOU could put it
back together again, only messing with your brain.

John,
gs,
Once you've entered the path to customising your pride and joy, you
have no choice but to learn doing things yourself. Paying hourly
charges for professional labour would soon exceed the value of the
car. I have a friend who bough himself a Lindi modified brand new
LR110 with all the bells and whistles - a real masterpice of
engineering. He paid =A325k for the car and =A325k for the modifications.
When he got tired of his toy he tried selling it for a reasonable
price - =A330k . He got only one caller in six months, and that was a
guy who read the advert without his glasses on, so he thought it was
=A33k ! If he did all the mods himself he could save himself probably
about =A320K.
I have a better idea, you come over here, help me finish my LC and
learn a few tricks ;-)

I am (slowly) converting RM184E into a pdf with RM434E & RM534E to
follow. Any others I manage to snap up on ebay I'll also add.

Would be happy to cross your palm with silver for these. I assume these are
the manuals for a '93 1HD-T (HDJ81)...??
Thanks for letting us know...

I shall only want enough money to cover a CD & postage, I'll let the
list know when there's anything available which I think may as well be
when I have just a few more sections scanned as I'd assume that even a
partial manual will be better than nothing till the full one is
available?
When I get further along with this it would be nice to think someone
with manuals I don't have might 'lend' them to me to add to the digital
collection. I say 'lend' because I have to remove the spine to get a
good scan so the end result for the original is hole punched sheets in
an A4 folder returned to you I'm afraid.
Best Regards,
Jon.

You could also try Bob Close, at Collyweston Garage.
(Not far from Stamford, Lincs).
Tel. no. 01780444271
Bob did have a Toyota Dealership, not sure if he still does, but he knows
more about Land Cruisers than anyone else in the U.K. that I ever met and is
completely trustworthy.
As Roman said about Footloose, Bob is not cheap, but the best seldom are.
No affiliation etc. just a well satisfied customer (on several occasions).

Thanks re info about Footloose and others, any recommendations gratefully
recieved.
I have been in contact with Julian. He is just down the road from me and is
going to take a look.
Cheers Tony

Hy Clive,
Just goes to show!
I spoke to Bob a couple of months ago on the number I posted.
I knew he was moving, but didn't realise it was so soon.
He has another place not too far away......could be in Newport Pagnell but
not sure.
I have the address somwhere, but with my total lack of an organised filing
system could take months to find it.
Looks like I'll have to find the old sod all over again now.
Sorry for the mis-info.

Hy all,
Just remembered, Bob Close's new place is at Corby. Don't know the Phone
number but it's now a Mitsubishi / Dihatsu dealership A.F.A.I.K. but I'm
sure he will not be averse to working on a Toyota.
Mik.

I was at Nene Valley Tyres recently and someone gave me Bob's mobile number
on a scrappy piece of paper - which I now cannot find. If I do, I will radio
in...
