Almost bought one but the buyer is suggesting it receives a service

Do any of you Engel owners have this undertaken & if so who by, whats involved & at what cost???

I'm buying this blind if I do - 5 (ish) years old, 2nd careful owner, £400 inc. delivery an hour down the road to a work colleague who knows now't about them & won't be that bothered...

Am I mad?

Hi mate,

Fridges like AC Units need to have their coils cleaned and refrigerant checked periodically.

As long as your fridge is not leaking refrigerant (gas) and the coils (heat exchanger) is free of muck, dust and other debris that would hinder the flow of air it should be fine and give you years of good service.

Check the manufacturers specifications on warranty and service requirements. If it has a good compressor (Danfoss or similar) any fridge engineer would be able to check it out for you.

Most importantly - don't drop it or turn it upside down or carry it at weird angles :o and if you did - leave it for a couple of hours before switching it on.

Good luck

Hi Gav,

I bought an Engel new in 2006, it's worked perfectly ever since. It's taken lots of abuse, has been used in three different vehicles, as well as indoors and has not needed a service yet.

If buying secondhand you'll want to see it working, make sure that the lid seal is in good condition and that it comes with both the 12v car and 240v mains leads.

Happy hunting!

not dropping is obvious, but why should they not be turned upside down :confusion-confused:

:naughty: .........all that turning it upside down will do is cause the oil in the compressor to get up into the coils. this is not a good thing. you will have to wait several hours for it to drain back into the compressor. it is about as effective as turning the radio up to fix a car that is making noise.

If you did it by accident or mistake and hear knocking, it means you got oil in the lines and then you are in trouble. You would be better of switching it off immediately and waiting 12-24 hours.

Hope this helps answering your question. This goes for residential refrigerators as well - when you move house try keeping it upright...

Thanks for that, I had no idea it could be a problem. Good job I haven't done that yet, now I will remember not to.

Gav, I paid £650 brand new MT45 from Foleys in Roydon, Give them a call (01279 793500 ) if that price interersts you, I can pick it up & pass onto someone going to Lincomb if that is a help.
You can load him up for the return trip

Thanks for the offer Dave - considering my options at the moment...
