I did pop down to Tools and Fixings but they don't have any, neither do my
local agri merchants, 48 hours to get one in so I'm sort of stuck with the
hubs in pieces and no socket for 2 days!

Right, I've tried every local tool merchant - no 54mm deep sockets, one
place can get me a 54mm box spanner but that's no better than using a chisel
is it?
So, rule of thumb? Whack the nut tight with the chisel until the hub feels
hard to turn and then back off one flat? Is that reasonable, at least
temporarily?

You can get those sockets in any place that does Draper toolsNiall

Hi Niall
How's it going?
Yes I could have got my local tool store to order it but it would have been
a week so it's quicker to buy Jon's multi-tool.
