fuel consumption

I recently purchased a 1994 Land cruiser but not really thrilled with its fuel consumption, I'm getting an average of 14-15 miles to the gallon, is this normal?

What mods are fitted, petrol or diesel info is always good.

One thing I noticed, My 80 gets better mileage than a 110 defender in the family ;)

Quite possibly. Might be worth a service, check tyre pressures, are brakes binding, usual stuff. The lowest I've had mine is 8 miles to the gallon (on petrol). What's slightly worrying is that a 50 year old 15 tonne armoured personnel carrier can do 4mpg on a run.
But as Master Yoda would say "frugal, you wish for? Then old three tonne permanent 4wd you should not buy"

Since I started adding 2T oil (5%) to the tank, my mpg has gone up from 21.5 to 24.2.

Tesco were doing Castrol Actevo T oil for £1.48 a liter a few weeks ago, I managed to get 15 liters (you could only buy 2 at a time) before the offer ended.... that should keep me going for 12,000 miles :icon-smile:

Interestingly I used a couple of tanks of their shite cheep diesel in my 335d BMW recently and the mpg plummeted from 36 to 30.6mpg, needless to say I won't be using their fuel again.

What's the ratio? and how often do you have to use it also are they all the same or is there any brands to keep away from?

Thanks

I've found with my 80 it's poor on supermarket petrol, using bp and it's better. Happy to pay that bit extra as mpg is improved. It's never gonna be great but didn't buy it to worry about its mpg. Got a 1.6 focus for everyday use lol

I use 500ml per tankful of diesel (94ltr)

29mpg on white, and 26mpg on kero/2stroke mix. kero is only 64p/l though...

Be very very careful running on kerosene (domestic heating oil). AFAIK its as illegal as running on red diesel.

Granted it doesn't have the dye in it like red diesel, but if VOSA pull you and put the exhaust probe in the exhaust they will find all the chemical tracers in the kerosene.

At that point you loose your car.

If I had a cheap few hundred pound car (old diesel astra for example) then I would take the risk and run on red.
But in a vehicle like a cruiser which has cost a good few thousand pounds, IMHO its not worth it.

I'm getting between 24mpg and 26mpg depending on the journey.
The best I've had would be 26.5mpg.

24v manual td fitted with intercooler.

In 1998 my 24v 80 was doing 32 mpg on 30,000 miles. Now it's 28 at 130,000 miles. Is it diesel quality?

I think its probably only illegal to run it on kero if on the public rd.....besides I would imagine that combined with white diesel, veg oil and emulsified two stroke oil they would be lucky to identify the kero. Most people I know with jeeps have registered to produce their qouta of bio so that covers any gray areas. Besides I also know a few people who's fuel filler only runs into a 3l tank!

I hope your right and I hope you never get caught. :icon-biggrin:

Not sure I buy the idea of registering to produce bio, and then running on kerosene as its considered a grey area.

I know theres people out there who run on red diesel, kerosene hydraulic oil, used engine oil etc. and get away with it and never get caught, and I say good luck to them. The government get enough out of us already, so if you can avoid buying rip off fuel at the pumps, then good on ya.

I've never wanted to risk it in my truck, I'd be gutted to have it confiscated and crushed. I just dont think its worth the risk. :icon-cry:

Doesnt get crushed first time getting caught Ben. 500 fine. Second time em pounded then 3 rd time it's looking bad. Know loads who run on red, heating oil and anything else they can. The amount of tax we pay the government on fuel is crazy. Suppose it's goes into the pot for all the benefit scammers and leaves nothing for the good honest people and the elderly who can't afford to heat there homes.

If it makes you feel any better I've had to run truck on petrol today (instead of lpg). I put £10 in and set off for lpg station 20 minutes away, and only just made it. So that's 50p PMD (per minute driving).

I don't bother with mpg any more, I just measure how many tears I produce when I look at my bank account. It's more accurate.

Thanks Chas and Imtiaz, just logged on and noticed the answers
