On my spare sender unit, when the float gets to the bottom of travel, there's a 'click' which I take to be a switch simply closing to light the lamp

It had to be something like that Chris, otherwise you would lose the safety of independence.

Well it's still reading full after 180 miles. I don't think I am getting 50mpg though, so must be a problem somewhere still Dawns been driving so it needs a good wupping off road I think
