When out in the LC today I noticed some gear lever 'behaviour' that I haven't before. In 3rd gear when on and off the power the lever moves back and forth around 15mm or so. No noise, vibes, gear changing issues or anything else, just the movement and no other gears affected. As I've never noticed it before I'm unsure if this is normal but it can't be, surely? Something must be weak or worn. Anyone else noticed this?

Mine is the same, I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Its harmless, may be a bit of wear in the mounts

Ditto, mines always done that!

It's the noises from mine in first and second, that bother me

My old gearbox used to do that on 1st thru 3rd, my present apparently recon one I have not noticed, must be good right?

When back out this coming Friday (beach party, oh and another one on Sunday as well, yeh I know...it's tough :icon-biggrin: ), anyways where was I yep I will check it out for movement.

regards

Dave

Good. Looks like I'm worrying over nothing then. I seem to be staring at the lever when it's in 3rd now I've noticed it!

Hmm, mine doesn't TP. Isn't there a plastic bit in there that wears? Need to look at the EPC.

The shift lever assy looks easy enough to remove from inside the car and consists of a couple of bushes and a small conical spring at the base of the lever (from the EPC). Maybe it's wear in one of these or is it likely to be something deeper into the box??
This pic if from the FSM but there's no exploded view of the lever assay. The lever just drops into the top of the shift lever control retainer.

IIRC there is a plastic/nylon bush that is attached to the gearstick assembly? This is in the bayonet fitting, the gearstick being pushed down into the shift lever control before being rotated and locked into place. When this wears the gearstick tends to rattle/vibrate/move.

Look for that on the gearstick assembly Towpack.

If the lever is moving back and forth as the power is on/off it will be caused by the 3rd gear wheel moving back and forth due to it being a helical cut wheel. I'll try mine soon as I've had the box to pieces out of interest and I know there is no wear.

As I mentioned above the shift lever assembly looks quite easy to remove so I may just do so to see what components it's comprised of and if there's any obvious wear but I've certainly no intention of going into the box any deeper let alone remove and strip it!

The gear lever will feel very very loose if there is any fault with the mounting or bush.

Totally normal movement I think. Mine does it only in 3rd gear. About 15mm back and forth. My gearbox has done 140,000 miles and when I stripped it to see how to put Ian's back together I found no wear anywhere. It's only done road miles with no towing. Any movement at all in the pivot or gate of the gear lever will be magnified at the gear knob about 8 times.
