Hi
Thanks to the LC owner who mentioned Rodney at Automatic Transmissions.
I had a look at his website, then out of curiosity I e-mailed him...
regarding improvements to the A442F gearbox.
Here is his reply:
All you need is I would just add the Heavy Duty Extreme Valve Body a
and this will make all the difference in the world. The valve body is
$795 Aus change over plus $152 Aus freight via TNT Air Express (3-4
days).
http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/release.asp?NewsId=4651
Options:
Complete Temp gauge Kit $245 Aus
http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/release.asp?NewsId=12031
Lock-Up manual Control Kit $195 Aus
http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/release.asp?NewsId=12101
The valve body is sold on a change over basis and you will need to
return your old unit at you own cost back to Australia within 28 days
of delivery. There is a $450 Aus deposit until your old valve body is
returned.
Some nice pieces of kit, especially if you tow or do serious
descending. My interest arose as I have had to use the brakes rather
than the engine braking effect on a few occasions. Also useful on long
climbs such as Ethiopian highlands and the climb up the base of Mount
Kenya.
Any comments appreciated
Cheers
Graham

Graham,
Correct me if I am wrong, but the Extreme Valve Body could be an
improvement for sports type action, not climbing or descending. The
A/T temp gauge kit plus an oil cooler is what you would need for that.
BTW, according to my experience with the A442F - if you have to use
brakes in 1st low, your A/T needs an overhaul, not upgrading.

Hi Roman
I am keen on the manual lock up, for 2 reasons:
1) To lock the box into 1st low and
2) To reduce fuel consumption. The Aussies talk of quite appreciable
improvements.
As I understand it, you need the valve body to fit the lock up to.
Ok, I have to admit that I only needed to use the brakes on very steep
extreme descents and I was towing / being pushed by at trailer. I just
know that having driven a manual 80 series that the engine can provide
better braking and thus control in this situation.
I dont trust Toyota here at all. If I were to get the gearbox
overhauled, do you know what that would involve?
Thanks Graham

Jon,
The manual lockup thing - if I understand it correctly it allows
locking the TC in any gear, thus preventing the A/T from selecting
gears on its own. But how does it differ from controlling the A/T with
the manual gear selector?
If the car accelerates sharply while overtaking uphill and the lever
is in position '3rd', it will not shift up because it is already
'locked' in '3rd', isn't it? What's the difference then if the TC is
locked up manually with a switch?
Also, if I select '1st' going downhill, regardless of the revs and no
matter how much throttle is applied it will not upshift. Again, in
what way the two locking actions are different?
Is the advantage of having a manual TC lockup in that I would be able
to reduce A/T temperature during very long steep climbs or descents?
Is it that during a climb the A/T shifts down to '1st' and the TC is
not unlocked manually, it keeps pumping oil and generates heat through
slippage? What about stalling the engine in such conditions? Provided
you don't perform such feats on a daily basis, isn't watching the A/T
temp gauge enough to prevent damage to the A/T?
Under which circumstances would I benefit from locking up manually in
'2nd' or '3rd'?
Finally, is this mod to improve more performance or reliability?
I am asking because I am having the A/T rebuilt after 200k miles of
reliable service, the last 100k with a cooler. I've never become aware
of any particular deficiencies of this system but if it can be
significantly improved (at a cost of =A3500+), the time is now. But then
I need a good reason to spend that money on the A/T rather than on
something else, like new injectors.

Graham,
Perhaps the trailer explains this. What I've found is that the speed
of descent in '1st' low was always well controlled, and could be
always lowered with a gentle blip on the brakes. On the big dune
descents I even had to use the thottle to keep the vehicle in a
straight line.
Which country are you in now?
Quite a lot as I understand. It's all written down in a hefty A/T
service manual. I've sent my LC for this job to be done by a friend of
mine in Poland - cheaper and more reliable. Bill, another lister here,
had his done locally somewhere in Essex for ca =A3600.

T fit it.
thanks

Jon,
What was the total cost for you of getting the TC and VB from Oz and
sending back the old exchange untits?

If I had the money spare I'd just order a couple of complete transmissions
from Rodney and wait for the boat!

I already have Rodney's A/T temp kit. I am quite sure making my own
lockup switch is within my grasp as it appears to be a relay, fuse and
a switch (unless I am missing something here). All I need to know is
how it is wired on the gearbox - which terminals are to be connected
or disconnected) and if the relay is normally closed or open. Would
you be able to help with that?
I have also noticed they have a dealer in Bulgaria, which is a bit
closer to home. I'll check this to see if it would work out cheaper
than shifting stuff between Europe and Oz.

Jon,
Thanks for that. I am no stranger to rewiring jobs and having my head
stuck in the
footwell. Trouble is, I am not sure if my LC has the A/T ECU. I simply
can't recall it being there.
According to EPC, the ECU or 'Computer assembly, transmisison control'
has PCN # 89530.
When I enter this number using my VIN # JT111TJ8007008238 and search
for this PCN # or 'Computer assembly, transmisison control', the
screen for 'Overdrive and Electronic Transmission Control ' comes up
blank and the associated drawings appear only if select Match OFF with
F9.
Also, in the drawings a selector button is shown which, as I
understand, is used for activating the overdrive. My A/T gearbox has
no such button. I also have no other additional items associated with
electronic controls, such as throttle position sensor, etc.
Now, if my gearbox is A442F, is it a different version than yours, or
is it a different gearbox altogether?

Jon,
O well ... one less electronic gismo to worry about. I'll speak to
Rodney which options are available for this box.

Malcom I have a used H55F sitting here, it has 6000km on it. It also
has an output shaft that is too long, it had a rear PTO went on the end
and it will be impossible to use without replacing the shaft. It came
off a fire engine. And yes I do have the rear PTO and no it is not
likely that you can use the rear PTO unless you remove the tubular cross
member (which is why I have a spare transmission in the first place).
It is going to be costly to ship but it should not be any more than
shipping out for Oz.

Hi,
I have spoken to Rodney and according to him I have an A442F but it is
a hydraulic and not the electronic version for which he can supply the
Heavy Duty Extreme Valve Body with Lock-Up in Both 3rd & 4th Gears for
Aus$795 + shipping.
Considering the applications it is intended for, the cost and the
trouble of shipping my VB there and back across the world, do you
think it is going to be a worthwhile investment? I am not sure if the
lockup option for 3rd and 4th only is going to make a significant
difference, either.
What do you guys think?

You probably know what I think about auto boxes! And I confess to some
quiet chuckles reading the posts about turning them into manuals...
On a more helpful note:
Give the Exeter Gearbox Centre a call on 01392 434049. I've no idea
what they may or may not do in the way of auto box mods, but they
*definitely* know their stuff and - for the price of a telephone call -
they may give you some closer to home alternatives.

Different thing to a LC but the auto box in my car locks up in 4th and 5th
to provide significant improvement in fuel economy which suggests some
reduction in heat generated and power wasted? Does the lockup work when you
are in low ratio?

Hi Dave.
Will a H41/H42 transfer box fit it? When you say rear PTO - that mounts on
the transfer box or is it a single unit?
I had a look at the tube cross member - no problem moving that back and
adding something under the gearbox, shorting the rear prop is OK, as is
lengthinging the front one but I like my transmission handbrake.
As to shipping - my post was a little tongue in cheek but as you know
shipping three gearboxes is only a little more in cost and hassel than
shipping two and I imaging H55 boxes are quite easily obtained in OZ.
