Dear Forum,
Joined you all last year and I am a greenhorn with my first 80 series. Here is a tail of woe that I hope others can benefit from.....
I purchased an Ex Yugoslavian UN HZJ80 in September last year, that was produced in 1996.
Sadly it wasn't fiitted with factory front and rear lockers and having had a factory locker on a previous Landcruiser I decided to get an after market one. Harrop E-Locker being my preferred choice as no need for air lines and seals.
Anyway I ordered the Harrop E-Locker that's advertised for the 80 series from the supplier and due to difficultiy in finding a suitable mechanic to fit the locker it took 5 months before it was in a differential specialist for fitment.
A call from the mechanic a few days latter with an accompanying whatsapp video confirmed it didn't fit.
The bottom line being even though the HZJ80 I have was manufactured in 1996 (Civilian should have fully floating axles by then I beleive) it is fitted with a semi float rear axle.......and that housing and construction type (C-Clip to secure the axle) won't take a Harrop.
The supplier won't take my unfitted locker back into stock even though they never checked with me (yes I know I should have checked here on the forum with hindsight) which axle I had and to be honest I had no idea that two different axle configurations are possible on an 80 series Landcruiser. You live and learn and this has been a very expensive lesson.....to be totally honest I didn't even know what a semi and fully floating axle was until uncovering my mistake.....so if I sound like a greenhorn I at least have the courage to admit it
.
A couple of emails to Harrop in Australia lead to very apologetic replies for my mistake but the result is I have a brand new Harrop E-Locker for a Fully floating rear axle 80 series I now want to sell.
I understand most people on here would have spotted this blunder but as I said I just didn't know so maybe this thread might help others avoid a very costly mistake.
For sale advert to follow, shipping internationally is possible.
Kind Regards
Craig.
