Help needed - Which handbrake shoes...?

I upgraded my brakes from the earlier ones to post 93. On the rears this included swapping over the bellhousing. Does this mean I carried over the post 93 handbrake set-up as well?

My handbrake is stuffed having just failed the MOT and there is no more adjustment left. So, I need to replace the handbrake shoes but don't know whether to order the early ones or the post 93. I checked on Toyodiy but the part numbers appear to be the same for both years :?

I would think that they're the same, Lorin - AFAIK the later brakes simply have larger diameter discs - stands to reason that the handbrake drum would remain unchanged. They're just as 5h1t on the later ones, that's for sure
If Toyodiy says they're the same part no, then I'm sure you're fine.

Maybe worth checking the shoes first before you buy? They may be ok and it's the cable and bellcrank adjustments that have gone awry. Have a read of Chris' "how to get the best out of your handbrake" tutorial for some pointers. It's a bit fiddly but not difficult.

Cheers,
A

Cheers Andrew, I'd forgotton about Chris's tutorial, I'll have a look

The reason I'm confused about the brake shoes is that Milner list them as different with a big price difference. 90-92 are £26 whereas post 93 are £48

As an addition to the hand brake set up thread, I have found that if you make the slaved side (drivers) ever so slightly tighter than the pulled side it balances better. The thread tells you to basically adjust them to the same feel. Something gets lost when you pull the lever and the driver side never quite gets as good a tug.

There might be different sizes as when i ordered mine from Ian for my '95 the wrong size ones arrived. Not sure if they were the wrong model or wrong year but might be worth some digging. Or you could ask Ian

Hi Lorin,

In a word: yes.

They are definitely different sizes pre and post August '92 build. The later ones fitting the later larger diameter disc/drum unit you've upgraded to.

Might it be worth having a look in there to check they are actually worn out before ordering? There are lots of potential seizure points in the system that could just need freeing up...

All the best,
Toby

Thank you Toby  I'll go ahead and order the larger ones. The truck is booked in to have the work done at a local 4x4 specialist and as I am supplying the parts, I confirmed with Milner that I can return any that are not needed.
