HighLift Jack failure

Hi Folks,
I have my HighLift Jack mounted on the reardoor of my Prado 120 when
travelling long distances. I have with this arrangement had two jack
failures.
1st Time in the Sahara, with the following symptoms:
The Jack operates fine when lifting, but it will not go down again.
I have to manually manipulate the pins for it to go down.
A thorough clean of pins and mechanism with rags and air-blast makes no
difference, only
a complete strip down cures the problem with access to all the surfaces and
removal of an
almost invisible fine dust coating.
2nd Time in Iceland, where the condition in parts of the interior is not
unlike the conditions in
the Sahara with plenty of fine dust and a particle size similar to that of
talcum powder,
symptoms as above.
Has anybody else had similar problems & know of a cure, other than the
purchase of a new
Jack or perhaps a different make.

Sounds like it's time to buy a good dust sleeve to put it in. You
could make one from polythene tubing.

Hi Jorgen,
The main thing with the HiLifts is to try to keep them out of the dust -
I know some people use motorbike inner tubes cut in half as a dust cover
- a bit like a giant condom.
Also have you considered some of the silicon based dry lubrication sprays
as an alternative to oil on the problem parts? These can lubricate
whilst not attracting dust.
Finally perhaps it is just too tight and needs to be used more often ;-)

Jorgen,
As far as I can remember, your jack is still covered with red paint.
Try stripping it off first and lubricate the jack very lightly. Dust
and thick grease act like mastic.

Hello the Jorgen and Roman well I can tell you something. My High Lift
is come from my brother-in-law in America who did transit it directly
to me on Air France, and so may be it is differents from yours.
It did come with a big black ziping cover for it all like Julien say -
a bit like a giant condom. This did come originale with the jack. May
be you can buy one some where.

Oh yes I forget to say that to mount this with the integral cover I
must first burn some wholes there for the mount posts. I melt them
wholes so the nylon do not unthread itsefl.
