How to flush the Cooling System prior to Radiator change?

Re: How to flush the Cooling System prior to Radiator change

Right, I think I've found it, it is in the same position as Pauls photo shows on the Oil cooler cover, but mine isn't a two part plug, it just looks like a bolt & washer.

God knows how you are meant to get in back in after removing it though, with the injection pump in the way there's virtually no access.

This is viewed from underneath.

That is definately where mine is but, yours looks like a blanking plug

Are you sure yours isn't to the right of the oil filter (looking from the passenger side wing) as in the other photo.

Yes, there's not even a tapping there.

I've just been reading the repair manual for the 1HD-FT & in the cooling system section (page EG-178) it clearly describes & illustrates that it's a drain plug & that it's on the oil cooler cover.

A bit more supporting evidence.

Easy Tiger :hand: your last post implied that position was blanked off!

I'm just trying to add to the forums info that this is where the block drain is located on the 1HD-FT. Hopefully it will help somebody else in the future

On all the Landcruiser forums, this question seems to get asked fairly regularly but I haven't been able to find a definite answer anywhere.

By the looks of things there are two possible places for the drain, either here:-

or here:-

When I thought you had what looked like a blanking plug in there, I asked if yours was to the right of the filter. You established that regarding your truck and the second photo:-

So yours must be located the same place as the first photo  ;)

Sorry for the confusion Brett.

No need to apologise Paul, I thought you were just yanking my chain a bit

Just to show I'm not cracking up heres a photo of the alternative location near the oil pressure sender on my truck. I've disconnected the electrical connection for clarity.

Re: How to flush the Cooling System prior to Radiator change

A bit more information gratefully received from the Guys over on LCOOL; one of the contributors has checked the Electronic Parts Catalogue & it seems the difference in the coolant drain plugs position is determined by the block type due to the model year the engine was supplied in.

The Early 1HD-FT production engines utilised the drain plug mounted in the alloy oil cooler cover. The Later engines have the 'tap' type drain cock which is screwed into a drilled & tapped boss which is cast into the block near the oil filter.

The engine block, oil cooler cover and drain plugs all change part numbers at 1997/05. So it seems the earlier blocks lack the cast boss that the later ones have.

The block change apparently affected all 1H# motors from 1997/05. Possibly the new casting was to suit the soon to be released 1HD-FTE.

Thanks to Snailtrail (Darren) & hdjeighty (Ian) over on LCOOL for their contribution & allowing me to post the information here.
