and using it as a second vehicle did nothing?
Tried that saying the Merc A class was cheaper to run as the daily drive but it didn't seem to help.

But won't they take into account the named drivers record?

When I put Ray on my policy last year they wanted all the same details and I had to change over to Flux to get him on but it was an expensive addition, nearly doubled the premium. Modified + bit of an 'at fault' record can be a problem. Did you try compare the whatever .com? I had a play with those when I was trying to get Ray added and there were plenty of options there if I didn't mind a huge excess.

I did try the compare.com, and various others but no go, there was no mention of a higher excess even after I offered it, only one company offered a quote, £900, but after seeing the mod list withdrew it

Chas, sorry to hear that you haven't been able to overcome this. Trying a different tack, we're part of this wonderful collective called the EU and goods and services are supposed to be traded freely within the union. I wonder whether that applies to insurance? People have done it with Carnets in the past when planning long overland trips trips, so it's worth a try with regular insurance.

You could try a German provider, on the basis that they might pay you out if you ever made a claim, but they might be a bit "bureaucratic". Or you could try a Greek insurer on the basis that they'll take business where they can get it - but maybe not such a sure thing if it came to making a claim :shifty:

Good call AP - isn't Scott doing just that with a German outfit?

Gav - I'm arranging breakdown cover through the ADAC, but I haven't tried with insurance. I did ask about insurance but the guy I was speaking to was unsure wether it was possible.

Problems I foresee are, having a UK car insured abroad (but still in the EU) may mean that it isn't listed on the MID (motor insurance database), that all the ANPR cameras are linked to, so you may end up being pulled over regularly and being acussed of having no insurance. If you can't prove that it is legally insured then the nice police man can seize the vehicle till you can prove to them/satisfy them that it is legally insured.

As Andrew says, another problem maybe the issues encountered if you were unfortunate enough to have to claim. The insurance company would need to have reps in the UK to be able to assess a car and arrange a repair, let alone possible problems of a language difference. Etc.

I do wonder if it's even possible to insure a UK car in another EU country for a full year? I would have thought that if you did need to insure your UK car in another EU country, that they would only do it on a temporary basis, 1 month - 3 months - 6 months sort of arrangement? I reckon to get a years cover you'd atleast need an address in the relevant country before they'd even entertain the idea, but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

Insuring a modified vehicle is an awkward task, and at the moment, a rather expensive one.

Well remembered though Gav  See, your not just a pretty face!

2 bits of info

I insured 2 lc's in my wife's name with her as the primary driver, me as a named second. No points, no no claims bonus, no mods, £250 excess, parked in garage and paid £460 for the 90 series and £560 for the 80
Used the compare websites and both put me on to Sureterm direct insurers
Hope that helps Toby..

Wrt overseas
It's pretty much a non starter. It is possible, but by the time you've done conversions for exchange rates, made phone calls, looked at the added risk etc I found it unfeasible. I also tried getting insurance for the Africa trip and there is a lovely company in holland who specialise in it, but they charge specialised prices. Over 2000 euros for 6 months - so we went with naught. It's not worth the paper it's written on there!

Very sorry to hear your news Chas :(
