I've recently bought a lovely 100 diesel 12 valve and was thinking of adding an intercooler. I'm wondering what are the pros and cons.

It looks like it would be a pretty straightforward job to do but I be grateful for any tips.

There's a few ways to approach this.

Intercooler:
Top mount
Front mount
Side mount

This is primarily dependent on what space you have and the type of driving you do, e.g. you don't want a low front mount if you do a lot of mud driving, etc.

Chargecooler:

Not as efficient as an intercooler, little more complex, but more robust for offroading applications.

My 2001 24-valve 4.2 litre 100 has an Intercooler.

I didn't realise that the earlier 12-valve models didn't have them.

Can the later Toyota cooler be retro-fitted (does anyone know) ??

Bob.

I didn't know that the 100 came with a 12 valve engine. Every days a school day. :)
There's various fitments of intercooler available including a mahoosive 3" bore 2foot wide one from eBay that seems to fit up front.

An air to air intercooler is just a glorified pipe so if you can physically fit it then it can't do no harm .

I don't know your engine but assuming like the 1kz-te it has an electric fuel pump it will have sensors on the intake which tell the ecu how much fuel should be added at the pump .

Again its guesswork but i imagine the later with intercooler 100's take those readings from a different place , possibly having a sensor in the intercooler , shifting those sensors on my 1kz-te really upped the benefits of fitting a cooler taken from another Toyota .

I think an intercooler is generally accepted to add about 15 horses to your power chart .

I agree and disagree on that comment with equal measure - in performance terms a charge cooler will always outperform an inter-cooler if you can cool the water down properly - unfortunately thats the hard part, the charge cooler adds another inefficiency in addition to the already inefficient coolant system (even though separate rads).

However, in off-road terms a charge cooler is probably more efficient as its not relying on air speed to cool as much as a normal inter-cooler is and gains good cooling from the fan draw.

Ok thanks for all the replies. I'm not totally sure if my cruiser has an intercooler or not. I'm in the UK just now and the car is in Zimbabwe so I'll have to wait till I get back to Zim to check it out.. I've only just bought the car and haven't taken possession of it yet. I'Ve attached a picture of under the bonnet and from the pic. it looks as though it doesn't have one but I'll know for sure in a little over a week. Can't wait to take it for a spin...

No - its not fitted with a inter-cooler. Its factory standards 12 valve.

Thanks Roger,

Thats what I thought.

I'll add intercooler to the list of thing to do to it along with EGR block, oil catch tank, new hoses (just in case), figure out how to turn off the steering wheel adjuster....

I'm sure there are a load of little and not so little improvements that can be made.

Looking forward to taking it for a spin, 10 days till I get back to Zim.

Front mounted intercooler now fitted (pics will follow).

Is it just my imagination? But it seems to be pulling better even before any other adjustments.

More updates to follow...

Looks like you have done a tidy job fitting your intercooler..

Isn't that a 105 series ?
Looks exactly the same engine bay as the armoured 105's we had years ago .

It's a bit of an odd 100 series I think it was special done for the African market. The car was originally imported from SA to Zimbabwe when new.

Thanks but I can't take any credit I had it fitted by PowerPipes here in Harare.

They have done an outstanding job , the routing and construction of the solid pipes is better than anything I've seen done in the UK ....they all look mandrel bent rather than weld cut and shuts .

I'm really happy with the work they did too. They're main work is exhausts so yes everything mandrel bent. A grand total of US$200 for all the metal work I supplied the cooler and hoses. Super happy. I'm going to our local diesel specialist next week to have the engine tuned to suit the cooler so I'll update after that..
