Intermittent grinding noise

I have a series 80 landcruiser 1994 build, turbo diesel. 320,000kms.
I have an intermittent noise under the vehicle, probably right rear. It is a short 1-2 seconds grinding noise. It occurs randomly sometimes on the flat, sometimes over bumps, sometimes going around bends. Sometimes you can drive for 1/2 hr with no sound, sometimes three times in 1 km.
I have had most of the suspension replaced by pedders.Wheel bearings on right front replaced. Brake pads rear replaced. Been back to Pedders and had it rechecked. Went fora drive but we didn't hear it. Could not find any possible cause. Went to my 4x4 mechanic he has checked it over can't find any reason. Hasn't made the noise with him. Leaving vehicle with him to drive home until he hears it. Started making the noise a few days after towing a caravan. Can anyone help with any ideas?

Just a thought but have you checked the body mounting's as heard they can do that.

JMO, but most other causes of grinding noises can be brakes (normally only grinds under braking) or wheel bearings. A broken ball (ouch!) can rotate a thousand times, then catch the flat and grind until dislodged).

Worth checking the rear right, but it means stripping out the half shaft and everything to get to that.

Suggest leaving this one till all else fails to find the fault.

Could also be the rear prop shaft Universal Joints (UJ) or one of them.

I had an occasional grinding noise in my 90 series which had me convinced stones were catching somewhere in my brake dust shield but everything looked as it should each time i checked .
I never found the cause and its gone now but your thread made me think about it and i am wondering if the tyres could make such a noise because wheel alignment is the only driveline thing that has been altered ?

Well I am  for the OP and Shane but, that is how my 80 sounded and then the T/B finally failed! I had gone through the flanges, tried removing drive shafts but could never force the noise on demand, this made it very difficult to find.

So, now knowing what I know, try to pull away hard in first gear, then come to a stop and try again, if it does not happen then you may be lucky but, I finally found the centre differential planet gears stripped in the TB!

regards

Dave

Seems JDgembrook has left the forum Rob. @Shayne may have an update though.

Are the rear races caged? I've had this with gearboxes where the cage has fallen apart on a bearing. There's a terrible noise when all the balls are round to one side of the bearing then silence as the balls spread out and the shaft centres itself again. Could conceivably happen with rollers as well.

As i said Rich mine cured itself ?

Thinking about the op perhaps the handbrake shoes are worth looking at , these little washer things sometimes
give up and are soft enough to rattle around in the drum catching only occasionally for ages i'd guess .

Good call Frank.

I have captured the sound on digital recorder, don't think breaks, maybe engine or body mount, suspect transfer case as the noise seems to happen not under load but in deceleration. particularly in straight line.
I expect that the constant 4x4 is causing the noise, will take it to the repair guts today. please comment on this once solved I will post solution.

Draining the oil might reveal metal debris as a clue.
If done before the ‘repair guys’ get their hands on it will be evidence for you to know if they’re looking after you properly.

@Shayne mentioned the brake dust shields, after fitting new rear discs a few years back before upgrading to slotted ect, I found a similar noise, it only made it when corning particularly hard to the left, it turned out to be the rear dust shields touching some unfinished flashing in the slot of the rear discs, two minutes with a grinder job done.

Hope you find this as noises are a RPITA.

The outcome from the horrible noise coming from the gearbox front drive train region on my 80 series TD. Well I must say this cost me but the results are fantastic, I took my trusty 80 to the heart and lung specialists who pamper my Landcruisers. Chris the engine specialist and Troy the drive train guru took her on many tests to ascertain the cause of this growling noise when the truck was not under load. We all agreed that it disappeared instantly when the driver throttled on. So I felt it was the transfer case failing, Chris thought it might be an electrical fault firing the diff lock in the center diff lock this was not the case but was worth the investigation. So the prognosis was a transfer case rebuild kit. New transfer but still the noise. So Troy pulled out the front shafts to discover the front steering spindle on the driver's side had flogged out. The spindle has a brass center with lube channels cut in and should normally be a snug fit on the shaft. But the worn side was so eroded that the oil channels had vanished. This wear caused a movement on the drive shaft that, when the shaft was off-center it cased the noise. once the shaft centered it went away. Problem solved There were many hours of toil and a complete set of bearings to the front but the old girl is good as new.
Thanks to the troops at Queanbeyan Deisel Service. I hope this information is helpful.

Ah, the phosphor bronze bushing wear that causes the shaft to windmill around.
Are they going to change your transfer box that they needlessly changed, back due to not inspecting it to see if it was actually the cause?

I had the same noise recently, bronze bush in the stub axle was picking up on the CV and causing a really terrible noise, only happened every now and then though, it shakes the whole truck and is very loud.

A member posted a howling noise in Oz. I wonder if it was the same problem?

Is this the noise we're talking about?
Random front end noise
I've just had both front bearings replaced and CV's repacked, my money was on spindle bushes but my mechanic said they look okay. Mine could go for weeks without making this noise but it's becoming more frequent. Cheers.

At nearly six years old (posted 2016), not sure the original poster is around to answer that. I've never heard that noise before though. Strange one.
