July 2013 - France/Italy Alps trip on the mountain trails and roads

Some updated trail news from August -

thanks to Peter @ Atlas Overland

- with some edits by myself

"Regarding Hannibal's trail - we didn't drive the southerly section from Bar
Cenis to the border as we were told that it was closed. It wasn't but the
French are closing it from their side next year. At the moment the large
rock has been removed so you can drive from Bar Cenis in Italy up to the
small lake, on the "roman" paved section over the border, down to the dam at
Lac Cenis and around the back of the lake to rejoin the main road toward
Lanslevillard.

The Sommeiller glacier track is still only open to motorised traffic on weekdays. On Sat
& Sun you can drive up as far as the Scarfotti refuge.

The Tunnel at Fort Pramand is closed for the foreseeable future due to
massive landslip. However, the official line is that the track will be
repaired at some point. This is the tunnel i video'd and Peter tells me it is boarded up now

The Ruta della Assietta remains open as usual on certain days only and the
refuge by the lake at the midpoint has been renovated and is now a small
cafe (bedrooms are in the process of being completed)

The roof of the Parpaillon tunnel continues to deteriorate but is still
passable."

Way!!!! Great trip, thanks for amaszing pictures!
