Repost:
I have a 1995 Land cruiser with a 6 cylinder engine - 4.5 liter.
My wife drives it 95% of the time and this has not happened to me yet, so I will describe from her viewpoint.
She will go on errands and the first 3 are fine. After that if she turns the engine off it will not start. (the engine turns over fine, I just replaced the battery and starter) After an hour or so, it will start and then runs ok. I will take it for a drive and it runs perfectly. I just tuned it up and my mechanic changed the fuel pump. (He thought it may be that). It is still not starting after the 3rd or 4th stop unless you wait an hour or more. It always starts in the morning flawlessly and it is running very smoothly. Have any of you ever had this problem? Thank you!

I changed the fuel pressure gauge and also the fuel switch and gas cap, is still doing the same thing. Temperature outside is now only 5 degrees and it starts perfectly in the morning but after driving a few miles and turning off will not start again unless you wait an hour or more. It will start immediately after turning off.

Compression check required?
Is your engine worn?

When warm, worn petrol engines will have a lower compression, which makes fro difficult starting.
By waiting the "hour" the engine has cooled down a bit, and compression is slightly better, enabling re-start.

Just a pointer perhaps.

Don't the petrols suffer with a vacuum forming in the petrol tank that could cause this.

Next time it happens ask her to open the fuel cap/gas tank cap and see if she hears a noise like air coming out. then see if it starts? not sure but its worth a try.

Howard, you need to go to an old fashioned Hotrod garage where they will know what to do. It's either sparks or petrol and if you leave the LC with them they will be able to test it in the non start condition. They will know how to bypass systems like the fuel pump relay if it's a fuel problem. It's very easy to identify whether or not it's petrol or sparks then it's easy to supply the engine with the missing item.

I'm with Frank regarding the fuel pump relay, especially if the mechanic also changed the fuel pump - he obviously suspected fuel starvation.
In my old Mercedes days, faulty pump relays were a very common non-hot start fault.
I bought a 560SEL (w126) that I intended to break as it "would only start on the way to the shops, never on the way back" so the old lady wanted to scrap it.
Got it home, low miler, gave a good clean, took it up for MOT and didn't switch off ;) and came back with 12 months MOT. Wouldn't start and blocked my drive.
Left overnight and it started.
Lots of head scratching and searching.
Hot wired the pump with a 12v feed and all was well.
New relay, job done, ran it for a year then sold at a very handsome profit.
Those were the days....

Personally, I'd be looking for an electrical fault here, either in the ignition or the injection. Carry a spare spark plug and when it won't start just connect the plug to one of the HT leads and see if you have a good spark when cranking the engine. A work around for the injection may be a little more difficult but you need to determine if the injectors are 'firing' and delivering fuel. If the sparks are OK then it has to be fuel related. I'm not familiar with the injection setup on the LC80 but if it is electronically controlled it could one of a number of things that could cause the problem, ECU, pump, sensor etc. so you may need the help of an injection specialist. Good luck.

Land Cruiser won't start when hot

My 91 Land Cruiser is having the same problem, it won't start when hot. Need to let it cool for 15-20 min. before restarting. New battery, compression good. Anyone find a solution to this?

Thanks.

My wife had a rover with same problem years ago (I know rover what did you expect lol),changed all sorts on it,turned out to be ecu,ran fine after.hope this helps mate

Try loosening the filler cap when it won't start, if there's a whoosh of air your getting a vacuum in the tank causing fuel starvation
