Heading to Alps in 3 weeks time for a couple weeks of Alpine laning.
On my UK laning trip recently, the back end sagged even with OME +150kg springs
new +400kg arrived yesterday to be fitted for the trip (and removed when vehicle unloaded of expedition gear)

i stupidly decided to refurbish the back axle... not realizing how long its going to take.
i have been using wirebrushes on anglegrinder and hand wire brush and compressed air.
paying particular attention to mounting brackets
one 1 in 5 bolts holding on brake lines etc snapped so far...

although when it comes to the rear ARB bolts i reckon they will defeat me!

the grinder brushes a lot more effective than a hand wirebrush i used last year.
grit blasting would be better though (like Bob did)

i will leave the panard arm, trailing arms for now
need to remove locker accuator again to clean up behind it.

will then spray on dinitrol rust eater, then prime and give a few coats of chassis black
then after alps trip get to work on rest of metal work and chassis, did inside the chassis rails last weekend

There was a lot of flaky rust under the old hammerite and waxoyl... salty scottish winter roads are not good...

I can't get over just how rusty the back ends of those trucks are, Mine looks like a new 'un compared to them!
Nice to get that sorted though.

Nice work Andy. Real dedication. Betcha wish had had gone to the pub instead. Interesting that you have both types of rear bump stop which is a bit topical. Did you add the cone ones?

Chris

no it came with cones and the other bump stops,
one fell off last night when i removed the coil, so i will have to fix it back, although i think coil holds it in place anyway

got a cask of homebrew in back room! so pub is onsite
but wish i have never started on this just right now

will have to add a grit blaster setup to the list, to join the MIG welder in queue
when are machine mart VAT free days !!??

VAT free days are random and only for that branch. Unless like me you got an e-mail giving me a weeks VAT free shopping in any branch in the UK. Wowser, I was off like a shot. Even more tools in the garage now.

Yes the spring holds the isolator pad and cone in place. You can put a spacer in there too. If you only have the external stops, you can't put the spacer in as there's nothing for it to centre on and obviously the spring would just slide off it.

shame the VAT free is restricted...

yep - i had some spacers but only 5mm on nearsie and 10mm on offside ones already fitted - OME plastic discs, they are mainly used as TRIM packers on 80-series front axles - as you know collie has same coils on rear

pic of the spacers - and notice OME coils still rust like ironman ones! these are 2yrs old

Nice work! A quick question - is that an orignal toyota rear locker motor or are they available refurbished or from a third party?

I don't think there is anyone doing refurbished ones. We either put new ones on or tidy up what we have with a coat of paint. New ones are very expensive though. But we don't get them from Toyota. The locker guard shown there is from Inchworm in California

Chris

its a new locker accuator which i painted to dry and reduce potential corrossion

paint question:

i have sprayed the axle with dinitrol converust epoxy rc900

is it work painting over with red oxide primer?

or just paint chassis black paint over the dinitrol?

removed rear ARB - 3 of the 4 bolts sheared, even after heat and cooling and free-off spray, and hand impact driver
so drilled them one and removed the captive nuts with dremel grinding disc and cold chisel

put a coat of chassis black on today

going to give it another coat and then spray with dinitrol underbody wax, which copes with stone chips better

and cleaned up the antiroll bar, clamps and springs and painted them

will deal with rest of cross-members and various control arms later on in summer, and chassis etc etc

glad i am not using this as a daily drive at the moment, gives me time to do these jobs

flash on first pic makes it look like there are bits without paint. Just checked axle after looking at photo and paint coverage is ok

Did I read correctly that Collie rear springs are the same as 80 fronts?
Not the same IIRC but the 80 OEM front springs do fit and offer a heavy duty upgrade for the 95 rears.

May I ask where you got the OME gear? expensive?

I am again toying with idea of a lift,
West coast emailed and phoned but waiting on price..
Maybe they dont want to do business.....
