Hi folks does anybody have any experience of the d22 navara engine 2.5d.....a friend of mine has just had his go BANG on him on the m4,and as he is not in a position to repair/strip himself he is looking for any specialist breakers/engine re-builders etc....Most people have told him to walk away/scrap it/burn it etc etc but as he only had it 8 months and spent a fair bit of dosh on it,he doesnt want to make any hasty decisions, but is prepared to spend some money but knows sometimes it just aint worth it.
I told him to look for a 3.0 cruiser engine (know idea if this is poss to get in there but know it prob wont do what the nissan engines done)
cheers Gary

Problem is the 3l TD cruiser engine will probably be the KZTE, which suffers from head-cracking issues.... He wouldn't want to go to the hassle of replacing the engine, only to have problems with the replacement. And any KZTE is likely to be 8 years old or more.
A D4d is an option but will be £££ to buy and might be tricky to make work with all the electrickery... My 2c

What about a 3.2 TD Nissan engine? They seem to have a reasonable reputation and is likely to be more of a straight swap than a Toyota D4d.

The 1kzte engine would be a good match.

It is a good engine, and once the cooling system is 100% you will be fine!

How old is the truck?

Problem with putting in an engine from a different make is that it puts a lot of people off buying when it comes to moving it on.

Always an awkward fix to be in, spend the money on repairs or put towards a new motor?

Pete

I brought one of those engines last year with a con rod through side of the block. Engine had 20 k on it. Poor engines.

agree with Karl, obsolute rubbish with regards to modern day reliability

One of my buddies has just bought a Navara with 30K on the clock - he's just been told the turbo is on the way out...

Gary, if your buddy decides to break his & the turbo is ok, let me know!!!

Even before he got it, I was telling him to get a 'Yota... But would he listen... Well, plainly not!!!

My Surf 1997 KZTE has 112 K on the clock and is running very fine. This engine has suffering from cooling, but since this system was improved on the latest models, there are no more head-cracking issues.

There are quite a few cracked head issues with the colorado's, less than before as they have improved the cooling system, however under very extreme load and going up hill the cooling system does not seem to react quick enough and before cool water goes in, the temperature shoots up. I would recommend fitting an intercooler to these engine. Also a separate cooler if you have a auto box will put less strain on your rad and it will be better. It will lower the temperatures drastically and improve performance.

Other than the head concerns, the 1kzte are Bullet proof. I have mine with 155,000 and not done much, other than oil changes, and filter changes.
