I thought I would start a new thread as the subject has changed.

I had a leaking ASCD and has being slowly getting worse. The last 3 months it has been left in the drive. Recently I removed the ASCD to check to see how bad it is. It probably needs changing but I wanted to get the engine going so I can put it in the garage to start work on it. Then I can remove the pump and injectors to have a specialist set them up again and also change the ASCD, while I work on wheels and transmission. The problem is that it still does not start after I have replaced the ASCD. The leak has stopped. I have had the engine start but only around a smooth slow tick-over and while I keep pressing the primer! As soon as I stop the engine stops. It will not rev, just a slow smooth tick-over, then stops around 30 secs later. any clues to what's happening?

Pick up in the tank, fuel filter, fuel filter housing letting air in

Thanks Karl,

I could rule out the tank pick up as the tank is full. Though the pipe from the tank and any joins be the cause. I will closely check the filter connections and also change the filter, its been a while since I changed it.

When I do depress the primer it does firm up after being pressed 1 or 2 times. If the primer is left for 10 secs, it repeats 1 or 2 times before it firms up. Is this normal? or also indicating that air is getting in?

Blocked Pick up filter in the tank? You can access it when you remove the rear seats.
if you leave the truck for a few hours and then press the primer, do you hear a gurgling sound in the fuel tank from the air bubbles? If yes, there is still an air leak.
Good luck.

I did mean the filter on the pick up.

These get covered with gunk over time and cause problems.once that is either cleaned or thrown away lol. Then change the fuel filter. If you still have an issue you can put a pipe straight from a fuel can under the bonnet. That will eliminate things

Sorry Karl !

No problem :) I should have explained myself a little better.

Another thing I have thought about. You may need to crack a couple of injectors open on the 17mm nut first just to get rid of any air lock in the pump.

Just check your engine oil level. It is possible for fuel to leak into the sump from a leaking drain pipe from the top of the injectors under the cam cover. Rare but true. The engine will then not start on standing until you prime. Your symptoms most likely point to a blocked tank filter.

If I 'crack' open the injectors at the head, I should be able to manually pump fuel out of them? or will it pump fuel into the head?

I have changed the filter as it has not been change since driving in Bolivia and 6-8 pumps with the primer and the filter was purge of air. That seems to indicate that the pick-up in the tank is ok. Whilst pumping I could hear bubbles being blown in the tank, at that time the primer pump went firm. I have mentioned this before, that the primer, if left for more than 6-10 secs then will depress as though there is air in the system, then firm up after 2-3 pumps.

My feeling is that there is an air pocket in the 'pump' part of the pump, so is not being able to pump, were as the primer is bypassing this air lock and not forcing it out.

It looks like I will have to get a few friends around to push the car into the garage where I will remove the pump and injectors for a full service, its been 120k miles since the last checks. Normally I would take the vehicle to the Diesel specilist and pay them to take it of and refit.

Crack two injectors. Crank over on the key until fuel comes out. It heaps pumping the primer at the same time. Once you have fuel coming out injectors tighten the second one from the front back up. Should then start. Once started then tighten the front injector back up.

I'm going through similar problems at the moment, mine cut out on me last week and wouldn't run, to cut a long story short, I did what Karl has recommended above and ran two long fuel hoses (supply to filter, spill return from Injection pump) into a jerry can full of fresh diesel (I'd filled at Tesco the night before and suspected duff fuel) the jerry can proved injection system was fine, and allowed me to drive it home, truck was stuck at work 30 miles away. Since getting it home, I've cleaned the pickup filter which was black and traced the fault to corroded fuel pipes. My new pipes will be here Friday, just got to drain 85 litres of diesel now to drop the tank!

A simple way to see if its the tank filter is to blow air through the pipe off the fuel filter housing. Back towards the tank obviously. It will clear a degree of crap off the filter temporary.

It can also blow the filter off the pick-up tube!
