Overland Spares

Hi Y'all
Hmm, England have just received another sound thrashing (in the
Rugby)... so I need cheering up...
So I come to you for your collective experience regarding spares.
As most should know I am about to embark on a trip south through Africa
in my recently acquired 1994 Land cruiser (HDJ80) with 68 000 miles on
the clock...It has brand new OME shocks and bushes so I hope the
suspension should be fine.
What spares would you recommend?
All thoughts and opinions appreciated
Best wishes
Graham.

Graham,
Don't know if there is any useful information but I once found some pdf
files on the MSF site.
Mains document site address is

Might give you a few ideas. Least the Lions won.

Hi Malcolm
Thanks so much for that. I am really pleased with the Essential Drugs
PDF, this will be really useful and reassuring to me.
Thanks for thinking and replying "out of the box", because when I posted
the question I was only thinking of motor spares/recommendations. This
is great -Thanks.
Best wishes
Graham.

I was thinking more along the lines of spare valves if your tires are
tubeless, that sort of thing.
One gadget on the pages that I haven't seen before was the funnel for fuel
that had a filter to remove water, looked more like a separator but the
notes said to dispose of it when expired or something. Anyone ever used
one, any good if you have? Also said to be careful when buying fuel to make
sure it wasn't cut with water!
Have fun.

Hi Graham
Im sure the ones who have done trips will help but I would think it would
be a good idea to check and recheck every thing on the cruiser that could
let you down.
I would also replace a few things like belts, and service a lot like your
Cvs, bearings oils grease bits, and look at all the washers unerbody. If it
was me going id have to take a 40ft trailer of spares with me just in case.
Fuses and relays might be a good idea especially the head light relay which
if it fails you have no dim lights.
cheers

Thanks for the that link - fascinating reading!
Their major problems all seemed to be wheel-related: tyres, cracked
wheel, bearings and brakes. There must be a moral there somewhere!

I had some problems with OME shocks on some of my trips. I don't think
taking spare shocks is worth it though - replacement shocks (although
not OME) will be available all the way through Africa.
I found most Toyota dealers in Africa to be very knowledgeable about
cruisers - they work on cruisers on a daily basis and know them inside
out...
Cheers

Re - Thanks for the that link
It's intreresting when you cross check their spare part list - the
majority of the stuff they brought - they didn't need.
But hindsight is great!

Thanks Niall
I see they even have a Excel spreadsheet with their spares list on it!!!
How organised.
cheers
Graham.

Organized crew alright - handy when you have 2 similar vehicles
Apart from spares
What are you planning on doing re vehicle prep - mechanically
BEB's?
Injectors & injector pump?
Fuel, water pump?
Alternator?
CV's?
Niall
1995 HDJ80 in need of overland prep

Sod's law says that if you don't take it you'll need it!
They also implied that they were pretty heavily loaded and were
traversing awful terrain, which explained why they were suffering
drivetrain problems. I wonder if the weight of the extra kit actually
caused more problems than it (might have) solved? Certainly the little
I have read about expedition planning always seems to conclude "keep the
weight down".
I suspect a lot of grit got into the brakes and the wheel bearings, and
obeying the Toyota injunction to "strip and repack" the wheel bearings
after wading just become a counsel of perfection.
I *think* they got the maintenance schedule spreadsheet from the Toyota
Gibraltar website, albeit hacked about a bit.

Not much really.
New tyres, new bushes, new suspension (OME 2.5 inch lift).
The vehicle is 12 years old, but had only done 66 000 miles when I
bought it a month ago.
It is in mint (as new - really, it is hard to believe but if you saw it
you would know what I mean) condition, so I am hoping that with a gentle
driving style I shouldn't run into problems, and if I do the Toyota
garage will be more knowledgeable and more experienced than my local
Toyota. ;-)
I am about to arrange an oil analysis with a view to getting some data
regarding wear in the engine as this should warn me of impending
doom..., but I dare hope that the low mileage and the care the previous
owner gave this vehicle I hope all should be well.
Any recommendations will be appreciated
Regards
Graham.

Hi Graham
Just a thought one of many but if you have an OME lift to compensate for
bigger wheels /tyres what happens if your OME fails in some way. Also I
remember something about the normal size wheels to get a good supply of
tyres are the 15inch ones.
It would also seem to rule out the SS exhaust as these are supposed to be
hard to get fixed.
cheers

Hi Chris
My thoughts too.
This is one of the reasons I am taking a trailer as this then puts the
total weight across 3 axles rather than 2.
Regards
Graham.

Re: 3 axles rather than 2.
You should have seen the trailers at Billing!!
5 star accommodation - deep pile carpets, solar shower, water bed
(optioonal), american style fridge freezer, kitchen sink, the lot!
What of the draw backs on using a trailer - compromised off road
ability?, Increased fuel consumption? , more tyres to burst & anothyer
axel to maintain?
Niall

Graham
No recomendations I'm afraid - I'm still trying to decide what I'm
going to get done
Would do the timing belt anyway - as for the BeB's - tough one to call
- one of those for the peace of mind
Niall

Hi Niall
True on the extra axle to maintain, but if you get the right stuff, then
you are less likely to have problems.
I'm not sure about reduced off-road capability with the DW Lynx.. it is
an awesome piece of work. Here is their website ( the photos are pretty
poor) and I intend to send in some decent ones with this thing showing
its true capability.
http://www.desert-wolf.co.za/
Mine is the Lynx model - it even carries 85L of fuel... what a kind
trailer!!! :)

Graham
