Paul's 80 photo thread

Thanks chaps. The axle rebuild was well worth it and highlighted some very rusty king pin bearings. It is driving well with the new radius arm bushes (and a couple of ball joints i didn't mention). I now want to replace the trailing arm and panhard rod bushes.

Oh, and another thing...Martin also replaced both diff pinion oil seals whilst he was under it.

Hi Paul, nice build thread! I just want to know how well your doors and boot seal with the work light and areal cables going through their? Or what did you do to water proof those areas?

Hi Fraser, the cables are literally just shut in the doors and I've never had any rain water come through. The CB aerial and rear worklight cables have been like that for nearly a year now.

- I have ordered a 4x4 Specialist bumper which should be here just before Christmas :)

Oh yeah.

Oh yeah indeed! Where did you get the front bumper from, and do you mind me asking how much it was? Straight swap for the original?

It was from 4x4specialist (http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/valionis and facebook). We agreed a price in a best offer listing and i paid cash on collection. My buddy Martin (https://www.facebook.com/MbautospecialistsLtd) fitted for me but was genuinely impressed with the fit and quality of the welds. He's not a bad welder himself and would think nothing of welding up a roll cage for example so good praise. I got a good discount on the bumper circa 20% if i remember correctly. No discounts were available on the rear bumper because they involve so much work.

Work has been manic in the second half of the year hence I've been very quiet.

However, I've got a few days off so thought I will get a few jobs done. Photos will follow as I've just got a new phone but...

I've had a pretty bad steering wobble and wobbly brakes.

The steering wobble was the king pin preload not being right after the front axle refurb. The king pin bearings were replaced and the old shims refitted. If you don't know about King pins they are shimmed loose not tight so I went down by about 1/3rd on each side. A quick road test proved it to be 90% sorted so I went down another third. I did all this by eye and feel, no gauges were harmed. If the steering wheel doesn't want to re-centre youve definitely taken too many out. The Rough Terrain kit had a full set of shims in it.

And now for the wobbly brakes.

I bought a set of black drilled and grooved discs from Rough Trax and they seem pretty good. Definitely seems to stop better. Frank will be pleased to know I stayed with Toyota pads. The only fly is that my calipers have seen better days and will be the cause of why my old discs had warped because they were barely worn.

Sensibility demands the LC makes way for an estate car. Sadly, it is now on eBay and as I'm not entirely sure what it is worth I've started it at 99p - bargain of the century?

That doesn't sound sensible at all Paul, I was just enjoying this thread again... :(

if your selling it because your unhappy with the way it steers I bet it doesn't have enough caster
