Fantastic! We get a wide variety of squirrels here, "veverita" in Romanian.

There's grey (but not many) lots of black ones, some brown and a few reds. Our garden is full of them! I'm told that the reds are protected on the Isle of Wight and that the greys are all but extinct. Mainland UK is sadly devoid of reds now, but I'd never seen a black one in the UK.

This one was on the Old Coach Road in the Lakes at the end of last autumn. We sat there eyeballing each other for a while.

Vermin. Kill them. KILL THEM ALL!!

Actually I love squirrels to bits. And hedgehogs too. So called because they are of the hog family and live in hedgerows. Those who are waiting for a punchline will be disappointed. I really mean it.

We have some reds on our bit up in Galloway. Rarely sighted so always a treat. But greys are just as cute.

I hear there are some Tit Mice too. Not seen those.

We love Reds! Not greys, imported and vermin (havent seen any in France yet, thankfully). If you have edible dormice ( Loir ) thems a pest - well cute when they hang off the wall watching you BBQ, but a pest. They play footy with wallnuts and hobnail boots in your loft of a night, and chomp electrical cables..............I have a recipe somewhere for them..... :)

Had grey squirrels nest in my attic (near Swansea) played merry hell with the cabling and did some serious woodwork damage. They would romp around in the night, pesky tree-rats. Still cute though.

There are black (aka melanic) squirrels galore in Letchworth.

Genetically they are identical to grey squirrels, the black appearance is a rogue gene, so all black squirrels have the same grandpappy ! This is why they tend to be found in specific localities, its a close knit family thing.

My folks have a squirrel living in their loft, currently putting bait out in order to give it the bad news.

Cheers

Pete

Definition of a squirrel - a rat with better PR :icon-biggrin:. Still vermin - but cute vermin...

Not that my brother in law thinks so. He's had 3 generations of tree rats eat the cabling in his loft. It's cost him a fortune & he's still having to trap up there 5 years on!

And as for the one that didn't quite get out of my wife's way in the 95 fast enough... he's still running around with his tail matching the tread pattern of a BFG MT!
