Yep, the phone is always charged and on board, last resort.

It’s surprising Shayne, although you’re right about not much helping with snow over ice (chains being the only sure way) I’m convinced that with the rear locker it would have climbed that hill.

The front locker was engaged and that was doing a sterling job at pulling the front up, but with a rear wheel spinning, it just polished the ice and made it worse.

From bottom to top with all 4 wheels powered, I recon it would have got there. Anyway it was fun, if not a bit frustrating.

More snow overnight, about another 20 cm, so a pretty view from the doorstep greeted me this morning.

Sounds like your rear locker actuator is working and switching but not actuating the locking mechanism in the diff Clive. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to operate the front locker. Or is this another casualty of the fried wiring?

Who knows for certainty Rich?

The indent switch on the rear isn’t connected, because the terminals on the switch have been dust for some time. So I’m guessing the front locker gets power switched from the CDL wheteher the rear has locked or not.

I don’t know the circuitry, so can’t comment other than by observing what’s going on at a given moment.

The rear locker is original and has always worked, until it failed in the summer. The fault was a broken (corroded) wire terminal at the plug. I fixed that and it was fine until yesterday, but there was no “whirr” from the motor, so maybe my connection repair is suspect again.

It’s not the right weather for me to roll around on my back in the snow, so it will have to wait till after the thaw.

Could be iced up perhaps Clive. Don’t know if that’s possible.

Yep, didnt think of that.

For sure I hadn’t travelled far yesterday, so the axle hadn’t had time to warm-up and de-ice it, if that was the problem.

It’s well below zero right now so maybe I’ll know more after driving home this evening, when everything is up to normal running temperature.

Thats some serious weather & snow Clive, both you and the truck having a mild slip up is certainly normal in these conditions.

Whether by choice or for fun your certainly being tested there. You definitely deserve a Braveheart award

:confusion-helpsos:

Not much bravery, TBH Dervis, just a quest for a bit of adventure, even though its just up the lane

I’ve been disappointed with the winter up to now, there’s only been a few snow showers, and nothing much settling, so this weekend is the first with some serious snow settling here at the house.

It must be even deeper up the road, at the mountains, but I won’t be going there if I can’t rely on my locker.

I’ll be no better than all the other idiots who go up there, slither about and get stuck

I know what you mean about the ice Clive. We went to Iceland a few years ago and went out to see the Northern Lights. The coach took us to a pitch dark place outside Reykjavik and we all piled out with our cameras. There were areas of snow and clear areas too. After standing on one of the clear areas I thought I’d move onto the snowy bit as it was going to be a better view so on I went with my tripod. I soon realised it was sheet ice, on a slope. Had I not had the tripod I think I would have gone completely over and slid to the bottom which would have given about 150 people the laugh of the evening.

You’d have given them a real “slide-show” Rich...

Groan... :icon-rolleyes:

Saturday 14 April 2018

So, the previous post was the close-out of the Winter up here, now it’s Spring... yippee!!

Father-in-law decided he had to attend a Forestry Preservation committee meeting today, and asked for a lift to Brasov, about an hour and a half’s drive from our place.

Ana had a friend staying for the weekend with his mum, so they stayed home and off we 3 went. Nice drive, warm sunny day (about 25C) truck running like a well oiled and no traffic to speak of, and we dropped him off on time to the minute.

Now we had 3 hrs to kill, so as we don't visit Brasov very often and it was just the two of us (very rare thing :romance-lovebluere:) we went up to Poiana Brasov ski resort and took a ride in the telecabina (cable car) to the top of the mountain...

We used to be able to drive to the top in the summer, but the EU have stopped that, anyway, there was still snow everywhere (it usually lingers till mid-May) and it was very pleasant...

Then we had the phone call to go and collect him, and down we went again... you can see that when we were able to drive up, it was a pretty steep climb and always some fun. Ah well, can’t get in the way of progress...

All looks lovely Clive!

Well it does really, and after 5 months of it being cold (but not necessarily grey) its nice to feel the sunshine again and have some greenery...

Aura’s first comment when we visited the UK in early April was look at how green and lush the grass is here!

It’s all brown in Romania during the winter.

Well, we’re in the middle of a mess at the house at the moment, having the patio and surrounding pathways reconstructed.

Those who have visited may remember that the supporting “wall” was failing badly, and over the 17 years of ownership it had bowed alarmingly and the patio level had dropped accordingly. I called it a wall, but as it collapsed we found that it was basically an organized pile of boulders, glued together with some almost cement-free mortar... :icon-rolleyes:

So, before it totally collapsed, we decided that this summer would see it reconstructed. We hired a guy who had about 6 strong lads to assist, and after many sketches, arm waving, Aura losing it with translations, they set about digging all the old stuff out....

Nightmare, my poor grasss...

Then they set about digging the footings for the new wall. Of course, the “difficult old Englishman” didn’t want straight lines anymore, and I spent 2 days convincing them that I wanted curves, and reverse curves at that, as well as a straight part and some steps done to the “lawn” and a flight of steps going up towards the (emergency) door leading from the corridor in the extension (that’s the sloping bit 2 photos up).

Now we have a profile for the curved bits...

Some mesh reinforcement (it’s almost impossible to convince these guys to set the mesh to a profile) dog it in, it’ll be fine. I didn’t mind too much, the wall will be 300mm thick in good concrete so it will be plenty strong enough.
