HI All

I have a big tirfor winch that runs a 16mm cable. Any ideas where i can get a snatch block for it - mosts of the ones i have seen have been a bit small.

thank you.

BTW - would it be a good idea to have a WANTED section in the shopping section?

Machine mart do one i think

16mm? that's a thick cable, don't think my 2500Kg hand winch is anywhere close to that, maybe 12mm more like. You going to pull a house down with it ? Not sure the MM items are big enough or the D44 ones, not sure where you can go but someone will know.

Thanks for the new section.

Jon - It's a 3.2 tonne tirfor, used off ebay. It's massive - i think 3.2 t refers to the weight of the damn thing!

Hoping i wont have to pull houses down with it, but perhaps just my cruiser if ever i get stuck.

Paul - i tried mm - it did not have one big enough for my rather OTT cable and winch.

The 3.2 could also be the lifting weight not the pull which would make it a monster! Mine is 1.6 lift, 2.5 pull.

did it come with a hoist for getting it in and out the truck? Might be worth trying one of the military surplus places, they may have used cables that thick. I don't think any of the regular 4x4 places would have anything with a big enough diameter wheel.

Good lawd Ade!!! Where are you thinking of putting the cruiser with that tirfor??

You could try David Bowyer at Goodwinch - he's a vay helpful chap...

Thanks Jon. It's a tad on the heavy side and a good workout to lift it, and then a slightly smaller workout to lift out the cable that resides in an old Kwik Fit tyre I liberated from a tyre shop early Sunday morning. It's a fair effort just to lock it open to get the cable in too. I'll check the military places. Good shout and thank you. Or the forestry guys too since it was ex forestry. Presume they used it for lifting forests out of the way.

Gavlad. Not planning on putting the cruiser any place that needs it. My odd way of looking at things determined that if i do get stuck it's likely to be serious, so lets get a winch man enough for the job. especially since I do go out on my own. Anchoring the wee beastie to something strong enough might be the next part of the problem though  Thanks for the contact.

Yes, those battleships are hard to find just when you need them the most ;-)

might you be better off putting it on ebay and getting one that is more suitable? it could be very very very hard to use something that heavy in an off road recovery situation. It probably wouldn't cost anything to go to a slightly lighter version.

the cable itself is Tirfor specific and designed for straight pulls- your best bet is to get some 11mm plasna and a normal snatch block- you then have a some lightweight areas to work with. Working with 16mm steel cable by hand is feircesomely difficult and you'll need a mammoth pair of gloves to protect your hands.

Both mine would take 16mm cable but I think you need a bigger diameter pulley block, I don't think your 16mm tirfor cable will like that size block for anything other than a slight change of direction but maybe there's a manufacturer / specialist you can check with.

Thanks Jon

I think you a re right. Its tight just winding it into a 13 inch tyre to try and keep it contained and tidy.

I'll keep my eyes open. I guess as well with a 5 t pull i might get away without the snatch block.

don't foget the safety factor - for lifting there is normally a safety factor or 5:1 or so- so that tirfor could probably pull 10tonnes or more- possibly a bit higher than you might need even for a lardy landcruiser

don't forget powered winches don't tend to have a safety margin so a 9.000lb winch would only be suitable for a max lift of 1800lb- not even 3/4 tonne!

that is a bit oversized, my 2500Kg pull has always been good enough although hard work near max pull for any length of time. If I needed more than that either double up or (usually) do some more digging / jacking / stacking first to reduce the load.

Just looking at getting a snatch block for my recovery box, and found this old thread....

Do you think the one that Rob linked to will be good enough for LB
http://www.firstfour.co.uk/hand-winches ... 415157.php

Or should I be looking at something more substantial, something like this:
http://www.devon4x4.com/products_a/p136 ... block.html

or is the ARB on essentially the same just a lot more expensive?

The winch has a plasma rope in it, so will this be ok with a snatch block?

The reason for this is that I found on Sunday that with LB stuck in a mud hole with a slight bank to climb at the end of it, the winch did struggle a bit.....

Standard Machine Mart one or Goodwinch works fine. Winch shouldn't be struggling Tony. Wonder if that main battery is on its way out. You need a good battery when winching. If it's struggling, you are really winching off your alternator. Did you link the batteries with the IBS system? You don't need a special plasma snatch block.

Cheers Chris,

Well the MM one is more expensive and "only" rated to 8T wheras the one Rob found is slightly cheaper and it's 9T, so I may go for that.

Don't think it's the main battery as I changed that a few weeks ago (got a second hand new one off a cousin). I did not link the batteries (clean forgot), but after I got myself out of the hole, I found that I could not wind the rope back on the drum as it would not work. In the end I coiled the rope around the spot lights and left it for a half hour or so and then it was fine. So that could be overheating due to voltage drop.....

We use to use a snatch block with 35mm cable!! Before antone asks, it was a 35T winch.
Just as said it needs to be bigger. I would say for a 16mm cable you need one about 250mm round.
