Hi can someone please advise me. I am having my timing belt replaced this weekend I have just bought a timing belt kit which consists of a timing belt and a pulley. It's a dayco make But there is no Hydraulic Tensioner with the kit. Do I need one??? The retailer of the kit claims I should only change it if it looks oily or warn.. What do you experts suggest??

Regards

When will you look at the timing belt again - in 40 or 50 thousand miles maybe ? so given the age of our trucks i would change the tensioner while i'm at it just for long term peace of mind .

But hey i hope my truck is used to cart my coffin to the cemetery

Lol shane hope your cruiser outlives you! As for me the wife says she's gonna bury me in it! My cruiser has 133k on the clock and the timing belt was done when it had 98k on the clock in 2008 by Toyota

I would change the tensioner if it has been in there since 08. The belt is such an easy job on these that even a mechanic shouldn't have much labour cost, and because it's a part that has to come off, it makes sense to get a tensioner anyway

My mrs said something similar and look that accompanied it has me hoping i'm already dead when it happens lol

It's your call really mine was changed by Toyota at 90 odd k and i'm on about 130 now without replacing tensioner , i can't recall anyone complaining of a failure on here . There's plenty of 90 series still running about with mega miles with nothing but servicing by the book .

Never heard of timing belt or tensioner failure on one of these at all. My only thought was that it's in there 9 years, so worth doing imo. With the mileage on mine, I've done this a few times before and always replaced the 3 components. As you say though Shayne, nothing but routine servicing really (scv's maybe just outside routine)

If it's going for a vote, I'd say change it.

It's not my money, admittedly, but even if it was, I'd still change it.

I changed my tensioner when I put a new Timing Belt on, but to be honest the old one was perfectly good. I compressed it and pinned it and its in the spares box "just in case".

My T Belt light came on yesterday, and the service workshop I use confirmed it was changed 80k km and 4 years ago.

After a bit of umming and ahing, I decided to replace it as a full Mr T kit, just to be on the safe side. It will cost me a shade under £260 including labor, which I don't think is a bad deal, and they'll do it at the same time as the engine and transmission oil changes and associated filters, all in the same day.

They serve me well, collecting the truck from, and returning it to my office when done, at no extra charge, so the convenience factor is a major incentive to use them.

My timing belt was changed at 80,000 km when I bought it, I changed it 6 months ago after a further 150,000 km at my local non specialist garage. Total cost was £98 including parts. the old belt looked new!!

As both ends of the Timing Belt run at half engine speed, and engine speed rarely gets much over 3,000 rpm, they don't wear much.

Its worth doing for peace of mind though, the 1KZ-TE is an 'interference engine' and the consequences of valves tangling with pistons means its just not worth the risk.
