To be or not to be - The High Lift Jack

Howaya lads & Lassies
Question for the experienced overlanders out there
For a 5 month 25K mile trip through africa... Do you need a high lift
jack?
Or is going to be just another 15KG that gets towed half way round the
world for no avail...
I've never used one & not really sure what their applications are....
have read up on them and they appear to be a useful tool but would be
interested to hear if any overlanders had much use for theirs.
Any learned insight appreciated.
Thanks
Niall
Soon to have back - 1995 80 with 1998 Engine - more on that later.....

I wouldn't travel anywhere without a high lift....in addition to be easier
to use than the convential jack when changing a puncture ...ive used mine to
lift the veicle onto sand ladders when stuck on the beach with an incoming
tide; to lift the vehicle in sand and mud, yu can at a push use it as a
horizontal jack..in short an invaluable tool..but the time to learn is befor
your trip
good luck!

You can also use them to pull you out. Becarefull though, they are
dangerous things to have if you are not conversant with there use. You
can easily give yourself a knock.

Jeff's advice is wise - learn to use it before you go and not just once, but
as many times as you can. Make a mistake and they're lethal. Also worth
taking something to use as a stand to put the jack on, like a piece of
decently sized and thick marine ply.

Thats what I was afraid of! But Jeff's experiences indicate it being a
good tool.
Will be good craic learning how to use one anyway
I've been messing about with an exhaust jack I picked up cheap second
hand. Bent all the undercarriage protection on a mates Pajero the other
night! A bit of marine ply is a good Idea when using the exhaust jacks
aswell!

PS - you should see a Nissan Note with an exhaust jack under it! It
kept cutting out with the jack attached and hasent been running right
since. Thank god I'll have the cruiser back this w'end!

Did you ever do any damage to yourself with one

Hi Niall,
I've always found them to be hideously dangerous things when using them
years ago on the farm (I recall being belted by the jacking arm as well
as catching fingers in the mechanism) which is why I went the exhaust
jack route, although I haven't as yet used my new one I bought for the
Morocco trip.
That's a bit worrying - if the 'protection' can't take the relatively
light pressure exerted by an exhaust jack, what use is it?
Assuming you are using it with a sturdy Landcruiser it should in theory
be a lot better to use in the situations that Jeff mentioned (jacking on
sand and mud) because of the low ground pressure it exerts.

Alright Julian
The Pajero's was very light and not up to much other than being a
mud/splash guard and had insufficient support points to hold the weight
of the vehicle. It was also linked in some way to the mudguards which
also bent out a bit. Guess the pajero's not meant for abuse and
definitely not for use as a training aid in exhaust jack techniques.
better to use
With the big tyres & extra lift on the LC I've found the exhaust jack
struggled to get the vehicle off the concrete to change a wheel. Saying
that I had the protection off at the time so there was a bigger void for
the bag to fill.
The exhaust jack might be better with the protection on.....
A nice clean bit of plywood or perspex would give a nice contact
surface and assist in spreading the load - & perhaps improve the amount
of lift you get from the bag.
I'm going to do some more work/experimenting with the exhaust jack
before I decide whether I need to supplement my recovery kit with a High
lift jack.
Thanks
Niall

Re - You can easily give yourself a knock.
your right niall
i was using mine in congo when hands slipped and the jacking arm hit me

Too right you were!
You must be thick headed! :)
I'd say even the french lads would be horrified at the language out of
you after getting that belt!

Hi Niall,
I'll have to get mine out to give it a go on my 80.
What make did you play with? I have a Bushranger one, but there are
plenty of others around.
If you are around on Saturday we could have a play - I'm also working on
another overlanders 80 in the afternoon which might be interesting for
you.

Julian
I have a Bushranger - not sure what model.
Just did an AA route planner on a detour via Cirencester on the way to
Hollyhead.
All things going well on flights into Luton & departure from Frogs I
reckon i'll be able to swing by and make the ferry. Hopefully I can make
i happen. Would be good to meet up.
If you have GPS co-ords or post code for your place - that would be
useful. Will give you a text Saturday morning and let you know how i'm
getting on....
If you can ping the co-ords to [Email address removed] that would be
better as i'm about to sign off on this PC
Cheers
Niall
