Tri axle

Your not wrong.. Iuse to own one an old J reg. A gang of us from my local rugby club set off for 2 weeks in St Tropez. It blew its self to pieces 150 miles south of Paris. I f@~%ing hated that camper it cost me a fortune to get it back home. I flogged it for 500 quid.. I didn't know one day it would be worth about £15,000 How the hell do they fetch that kind of money.... the worst engine ever made. Cult following or not...... f*@*ing Hippies

It was an email rather than a letter but if anyone wants a copy just drop me a pm with your email address and I’ll forward it to you.

Note though this doesn’t apply to licensing, you must have the right license for the max capacity of the trailer not what it actually weighs. It should be straightforward, if your license was after date x and you want to tow a trailer over 750kg you need a trailer test, but instead they have pissed around with and changed the rules several times. I think there’s now 3 different licenses in circulation with different towing capacities and the latest one means that the weight you can tow varies depending on the weight of the vehicle towing it, so you could have a trailer you can tow one day, but not the next because your using a different tug, it’s ridiculous.

I’ve heard of a few people being incorrectly pulled at roadside checks. When I was a lorry driver I got pulled for a tacho offence and managed to talk my way out of it because the traffic police that pulled me didn’t understand the law (I was totally illegal) If the police and vosa inspectors can’t get it right what chance has joe public got!

Yeh! its gut wrenching. My biggest regrets were my HJ60 1982. sold it in 1997 for £3000. and my 78 750 bonnie, sold it to a guy in Italy for £2000. amongst other bikes and mk 1 escorts we use to trash round the gravel pits for fun... Ah! misspent youth.. loved it

Nice trailer Higgy! I was running my VW lt46 loaded with oak and a 900kg trailer with the long beams on it.. so running about 6.5t.GVW. all was well at the weigh bridge but got done for not having my ratchet straps attatched to the chassis of the trailer. They were atatched to the trailer hooks below the bed!!! So with 3x straps and 6x tie down points which weren't tied to the chassis of the trailer @ £60 per hook end it made a mess of my day! IE 360... thanks!

Don't use the side hooks or ropes! Hook onto the trailer chassis! (but make sure you're not hooking onto the trailer wiring that runs along the inside of the chassis!)

Load of WANKERS!

That sounds a bit harsh Iwan.. id be tempted to contact trailer manufactures and ask em about trailer use and regs there are about 30 tie down hooks on my trailer and not one of them on the chassis or box sections. all on the side rail. I always put far too many straps on loads. maybe il leave a few off ... At £60 a pop

Just something else to consider... I always carry a box in the back of the truck its got the lot in it, all the straps spare 7 pin plug. 2x wheel bearings. spare bulbs of many types. break away cable. trailer/truck light tester.spare light lens and reflectors.. BECAUSE a while ago I just happen to be talking to plod in the usual spot on the A299 in Kent and he asked me if I had all this shit. Yes officer I replied.. its a good thing he said. because one day it will be a legal requirement.. And more.. Now on yer way lad.

Yeah it was an absolutely horrid day man! The hooks on my trailer are quite small and when you hook the eye of the ratchet straps on them you're relying on the weld and the strength of the eye... plus if you get a slight movement of the load, it's not far from unhooking off the side hooks.

If you get the chance to hook onto the top of the chassis then it's not going to dislodge if there's load movement!

I've been having a rethink about the lt46 van trailer combo... with the twin rear wheel the trailer can be waggling down the road and there's no feel of it in the cab! Lol

Heading back to a lwb sprinter pickup and same twin axle trailer 900kg in weight so a 1.1 ton legal trailer load!

The hooks are designed for sheeting the load, not restraining the load itself, they aren’t rated for load carrying and I’ve snapped them just ratcheting a strap down. The gold standard solution is proper retaining mounts properly fixed to the trailer.

Now iv left the centre of my trailer exposed. if I don't sell im gonna weld HD tie down rings to the cross braces.saying that iv always used the side hooks and never had a fail. now Iwan has planted the seed in my head im gonna have to do something about it.. Damn my OCD.

Ive been there a few times Iwan. I had a Ifor W twin axle Btail it weighed 900kg I fetched a SWB transit from the Medway not very heavy really. At 50 mph all was fine at 52 mph all hell was set loose.. 50 mph always seems to be the point at when things start pissin about behind you.. Iv never had any weaving or messing about with the tri axle. border line legal/ illegal . I will stick with tri axle.. and they are available in any length width weight combination... I think its safer.. IMO

Now this i didnt know..

Tempted but really looking for a tilt bed. I have a 3.5t trailer but the deck is a bit high for getting normal cars on....

I bought an IWT 16ft long tilt bed for general use and did ask the salesman about swl of trailer hooks and was told 500kgs each he told me that there is a stamped plate on the towing a frame and if you got the ring type set in the bed they are 500kgs as well hope this helps
