Wanting to have a land cruiser for overlanding

What is it like importing fro Bulgaria Silviu? There's so many "Romanian" cars driving around with Bulgarian plates I've often wondered how it's done without exporting / importing car from Romania to Bulgaria.

I know the Romanian import tax is steep, along with the spaga, it was going to cost me €12,000 to import a Pajero from Qatar 10 years ago.

For registering a car in BG there are some businesses that do this kind of stuf. From what I heard of you are not actually the owner of the car but rather an Administrator of the car that it's registered by that particular business. There is also the option to get an BG ID an then you can be the owner but you need someone to register you at his address.
A friend paid 500€ for the whole package (taxes, RAR, license plates, their fee, etc ) for a 3.0 Diesel Patrol.
Of course this is not the same as being the owner and you have to visit BG for the renewal of technical inspection.

Sounds like you have most bases covered Silviu. You seem to have done your homework. Maybe buy and sell along the way but I can only see that costing money. Hire one maybe in Chile? I really don't know apart from all avenues leading to huge expense. Buy one in the US perhaps first? Then maybe you won't have such import export issues. I really don't know.

I think Petrol engine 80's have a common head gasket fault and I think it's considered a good idea to replace it as preventative maintenance, a bit like doing the big ends on a diesel model - you might never have a problem but it's a common enough problem to be worth doing.

Hi and welcome Silviu!

I've hunted at length for a LHD and have ended up going with RHD due to the high price tags and relatively low spec of European models compared with UK and US. They also tend to suffer from the same rust problems we often get in the UK, which would rule out any hope of you being overland-ready by December. That said there are a few on www.mobile.de.

Sourcing parts and kit in the EU can also be time-consuming - but this Forum is a good a resource on that front.

Are you wedded to the diesel 1HD, or would the petrol 1HZ be an option? If it is, then you have the US market - and I've seen a good many rust-free trucks in California and Texas. No firsthand experience, but from what I read the 1HZ is every bit as reliable as the 1HD, if you can afford to feed it!

Hi Guy,

I have to get a LHD otherwise some borders will deny crossing with a RHD.
I don't have strong feelings towards the diesel engine, but I fear a bit about how much a 4.2 litre petrol engine can eat. I think the mixed consumption for a diesel engine can run for about 15 L/100 KM and probably the petrol engine goes 20L/100KM. Maybe I have the wrong numbers, anyone please feel free to fill me in.

Ultimately if I don't find a car or runs for too much, I will go get a car from Chile. Toyota 4 Runner seems to be common there and I think I can do South America with one If I don't go too much off road.

Hi Silviu,
At the moment I'm really stressed out with solving the car issue because I need to ship it at the very latest in beginning of December but maybe we'll meet sometime.

Do you mean ship it to you in Romania ?

When does your trip commence ?

If I will be buying a car from Romania I will ship the car from Hamburg/Antwerp to Montevideo(Uruguay).
The plan is not set in stone, but my first destination will be Falkland Islands starting 20th of January 2017.
My plan is to ship the car the latest beginning of December, the ship will arrive after some 30 days, I will fly and pick-up the car, and then go to Falklands.

Hello Silviu & and welcome to the forum. There are immaculate 80s to be had but they are rare & expensive.a lot of them are low spec manuals.

This is a site from Spain, right? This particular car it's very expensive, at least from my point of view.
Perhaps I should tell you about my budget at this point.

The maximum amount I can spend on the car is about 16000€ (all inclusive, including preparation for overlanding).
I found an equipped 100s that it's prepped for overlanding(lifted, bar&winch, suspensions, off-road tires and all that). Problem is the owner ask 17600€ which to me seems/is too much.

The advert is in Romanian but maybe you spot some of the equipment and work done on it.

Looks to me like a standard car with a bumper and a snorkel neither of which are likely to prove necessary for your trip . I fear you don't have time to be fussy and you are in danger of paying far to much for something you regret buying .

http://autovit.ro/anunt/toyota-land-cruiser-ID7GgccR.html#7ff2040ba9 this a tent and a camping stove will get you there and back no problem at all and then you can start your search for the right truck with the benefit of experience to guide you .

Hi Shayne, thank you for your suggestions.
This car I've seen before but at that time I discarded it because it doesn't have the emissions tax payed (it's ~3800€).
Given the fact that most cars with the tax payed are over 11000€ I'm considering paying this huge tax anyway.
I've talked with the owner and I will go see it.

Just an observation from Guy's very informative post above, there appears to a little confusion in the engine terms at the end of the post.

To clarify a little, the 1HD is the 6 cyl 4.2 lt turbo diesel (standard spec in the U.K.) and the 1HZ is the 6 cyl 4.2 lt normally aspirated diesel (without a turbo as in mine). Your estimated 15 lt/100 km is about right by my experience for the 1HZ.

The petrol (benzine) engine is the 6 cyl 4.5 lt 1FZ-FE and I can't comment too much on its consumption. It's likely to be higher, but the important factor is the price of fuel relative to consumption and distance.

In the U.K., diesel is more expensive than petrol, so the £/100km may actually be less than the diesel versions.

Between the HZJ80 and the HDJ 80, there are other diffences, such as the HZJ 80 has way less "toys" or accessories, and consequently the HZJ is a simpler car, with less electronics (to go wrong). It's also less powerful, hence slower off the traffic lights (and maybe top speed) but there's loads of torque there when you need it.

I went today and saw this car that Shayne told me about: https://www.autovit.ro/anunt/toyota-land-cruiser-ID7GgccR.html#b296a7e78c

Mechanically at first sight look good. The interior is quite used/dirty.
I still need to take to a specialist. However, the owner just called and said that if I don't buy it until tomorrow he's not selling anymore. I cannot decide today if this is the car I want.
Why people do such a thing, I cannot understand. Either it's for sale or not.

Don't be forced into anything Silviu. On the other hand, if it looks right, has little rust underneath (the real place to be having a good look) and it's at the right money or can be, then mechanicals can be sorted.

Personally if I was pushed like that I would walk away.
