Met up with Ray, Gary & Matt at the river side camp site at Rhayader on Friday night ready for a couple of days laning. Here are some pictures:

Started with what Matt calls the rock garden :)

Followed by a scenic drive to the next lane

Water levels look a bit low although it's still quite deep. In the summer of 1976 that island wasn't (an island).

I call this one the one by the dam

plenty of puddles all day

shallow river crossing

the dam. Come back in the winter on a wet & windy day and the water will be coming over the top of the dam

Gary thinking what have these boys got me doing now?

The weather turned a bit wet so there were no more photo ops as we made our way along Giants Grave, Black Yatt, Doctor's Pool and a few others in that area before heading for Strata to camp for the night.

toasted marsh mellows anyone? :D
IMG_1487.JPG

next morning was overcast but no sign so far of the heavy rain forcast

Matt headed for home once we were back on main roads off the end of Strata while the rest of us carried on for another full day of laning, starting at the visitors centre which it had been a few years since I last drove.

Just here we went round in a circle. Which is the correct RoW? 5 years ago there was only the one track but you wouldn't know that now :(

IMG_1518.JPG

Looks like Gary was enjoying himself
IMG_1520.JPG

IMG_1526.JPG

then we moved a bit further north onto the lanes around Nant-y-moch

IMG_1538.JPG

IMG_1539.JPG

there are a few washouts along here
IMG_1548.JPG

IMG_1549.JPG

would like a bit more flex but it's not too bad
IMG_1555.JPG

The pics of Gary's truck on this section are on his camera.

Made for an interesting comparison between the 100 series IFS and the 80 series SFA

IMG_1567.JPG

even the 80 couldn't keep all 4 wheels on the ground
IMG_1569.JPG

but it looks impressive and does have more droop at the back
IMG_1571.JPG

moved onto another posing spot :D
IMG_1583.JPG

front is on the bump stops
IMG_1584.JPG

we still haven't managed to put Gary off
IMG_1587.JPG

again the 80 cocks a leg as well
IMG_1591.JPG

and lifts a back wheel but only just
IMG_1594.JPG

About 4:30 Gary headed for home while me & Ray carried on to do the last lane of the day up to the view point which was the RV point for a club laning trip a few weeks ago.

nice pics

that first big washout looked a bit "butt clenching" - it terms of dragging the side of LC along the verge!

There wasn't any contact with the bank along there but don't worry I did find places to scrub the sides of eveyones trucks clean

Thanks Jon - I'll stick my pics up tonight, I hope ;)

Thanks again for a stunning weekend  - and you can re-export the midges though  Definitely have a bad reaction to them - looks like I've been attacked by wasps :(

Hmm - this photo's label doesn't make sense :

IMG_1478.JPG

the observant will note that Jon is actually reversing, and I'm holding a tow bridle :( That's what happens when you halt your forward momentum on a hump that leaves all 4 wheels with little or no traction, resulting in an ignominious tow across the river because there was no way either Jon or I were getting out to disconnect the straps in the water!!

In retrospect I should have chucked some rocks under the wheels - that's all that was needed I suspect!

More pics to follow on that bit ;)

I wasn't going to mention that ;) It was a gentle tug but I think it would have took more than rocks, didn't Matt try pulling you back up first?

Yep - but I don't think gravity was helping then - and we didn't try too hard for lack of room to manoeuvre :D

Thanks very much Jon for planning the route and Ray for the loverly dinner, myself and Christopher had a fantastic time, we got back home on Sunday at 4pm in the end and covered around 550 miles over the trip

I remembered my camera, but forgot the memory card  so I only have a few photos from my phone.

We arrive early on Friday afternoon and set up camp in the sun

Image0016.jpg

Christopher discovers free Wifi so updates his "Car Town" (Don't ask me) :?

Image0017.jpg

The other arrive and set up.

Image0020.jpg

We stop for tea under the dam.

The scary (at the time) bit - it was all ok in retrospect

Nice set of pics guys. Looks like you have a great weekend!

Looks like fun. Gary - you did not have to post the pic of a 120 being towed though an inch of water. Looks as bad as my wet grass moment.

the entry had deep ruts which were the problem (and the camera man on the opposite bank made him stop at just the wrong time  ). once rolling he'd have been fine but we weren't going to paddle about in the middle of the river unhooking the strap ;)
