Spotted this when I had the passenger door open earlier, somehow missed it when I was buying. :(

Doesn't seem to go down to the sills, just the panel and edge of the wheel arch.

Does this look like it'll need welding? Or just clean up and fill?

To be honest you need to cut out the affected metal and weld in new, if you just clean it up and fill it, it will be just as bad in no time.

Find another Colorado in a junk yard and cut out the relevant section to replace the rusted part. Folding metal to the shape of the wheel arch is not the easiest.

Worth checking the wheel arches “behind” those nice grey plastic covers. Some of those areas are prone to rust too. Ask me how I know..

But don’t think a wheel arc rust will fail MOT if it is not within 30cm of a supporting point. E.g. rear seat belt bolt point.

Make a metal patch before you cut the section out. Even though its rusty you still have the shape to make the patch off. Maybe to see if the sill has rust by taking the side step off as it's covering the view of the sill corner.

It's a bastard to find the extent of the rust. I've just got my 80 sorted after such the same situation.

The back edge of the sill at the bottom of the wheel arch looks ok (slight surface rust, no bubbling). But probably worth poking around in there.

I'm some months off MOT so not super urgent in that respect.

Related to this, any idea what my color code is?
The plate suggests K06 or KO6 but lookup sites seem confused.

Yes - the K06 is a two-tone code - see attachment for the two individual codes. I have the K04 so had looked this up previously.

Checked behind the covers, and the other side wheel arch. Loads of dried mud but all seems solid. Guess I need to get in there with a jet wash.

Rich
In the Ebay section, Andy put up a link to repair panels and they sell rear wheel arch repair panels. (sorry havent worked out how to copy links yet)

Ooh they look handy. £60 for a new panel it seems. Just need someone to weld it then...

Any body shop will match paint to a sample rather than the paint code Rich as the original paint will have changed slightly.
You have the best colour there btw. Me, biased? :icon-biggrin:

Progress on this today. Friend recommended a local welder, he's got cracking on it, looking good so far.

I sourced a replacement wheel arch from a local panel place which was a bonus, it fits nicely. He's fabricating inner arch and sill patches to go with it.

Rust not too extensive, think I caught it before it got really bad.

Looking good Rich, it will soon be back in the condition you thought it was.
Given that small hiccup, one of the better Collies we have seen on here.
