More sound proofing and chasing wires.

With the MOT looming I thought I'd have another go at the handbrake adjustment. Despite new shoes and a new cable I've never been able to get the brake to work as it should. Take it up enough to hold securely on a decent hill and it won't release fully, the shoes on one or both sides bind, especially when reversing. Fitted the new shoes and cable last year so I was pretty sure nothing would be seized and that was the case. I noticed for the first time today that the 2 return springs fitted to the top of the shoes are not quite the same. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me? One is made from slightly thicker wire with fewer turns so will be stronger. The FSM makes no reference to this. The stronger spring was fitted to the rear shoe on both sides. On previous occasions I've always put everything back as it came off but today I thought I'd try swapping the springs round, stronger on the front shoe, weaker one on the back and bugger me if the handbrake isn't, as near as damn it, perfect! Took up all the adjustment at the wheels, then at the lever and the brake no holds on hills with just s few clicks AND, more importantly, no sticking or binding. WTF! No idea why this should be. The difference between the 2 springs isn't that great to make it immediately obvious IMO, or maybe I'm just very short sighted. Anyhow, brake sorted!:icon-biggrin::icon-biggrin:

Also found a place locally to repad the driver's seat. The leather is fine but the middle and LH bolster cushions are shot. The passenger seat feels like a new one in comparison.

Loaded the 80 up, new chain on the chainsaw (never know when need it). Reasonably organised for once instead of a mad dash day before a trip.
Put some batteries in the camera, won't do anything except go into pictures so time for a new one!

spent 4 hours today getting rid of the stripes from the lanes and cleaning the 80. peed off any body send linex on a vehicle?

Fitted this this week, vast improvement on steering control over rough surfaces, the original was knacked.IMG_0694_zps4d5dc16c.jpgIMG_0695_zps48d14d87.jpgIMG_0696_zps43d6fec1.jpg

And while I was in the mood:-
I was'nt happy with the front bumper, a bit battered.

So I fitted a "spare" one, after a quick spray of the ends to matt black as a temp measure:-

Its looking better and better, although there is still a raft of jobs to do, the brakes work ok but are in need of an overhaul so that is imminent.

Nice Andy, your ball joint breaker is the same I found for £5 at the last 4x4 jumble sale i went too. A proper bit of kit.

A Sykes Pickavant for a fiver!! thats cheap. I bet I've had that 25 years and it was over £20 then. Still, quality remains long after the price is forgotten!!

I had 2 of those going back 30 years, one for best which I always used first on the 95% of tapers that cracked easily, and one for the bustards that needed belting when under extreme pressure.

The second one, for obvious reasons, got well out of shape, but I used to re-profile the forks from time to time.
Excellent piece of kit and I wouldn't have been without mine, when doing regular car work every weekend.

Yes, Bielawski's. A good price too.

I finally got round to fitting the intercooler and bonnet scoop (still needs painting). I also fitted an 8" fan on top of the intercooler on a thermo switch (the fan comes on when the intercooler gets over 50C). All I can say is, why didn't I do this ages ago!! It's taken between 50-100C off my egt's, and makes a pretty big difference in power. It feels like it's brought all the other mods together. I'm a very happy chap this evening.

Yes, it's come half way around the world with me, but didn't travel that well. Despite taping it up with stiff cardboard the bottom fins took a bit of damage. I spent 3 hours with a sharp pointy thing and some needle nose pliers opening up all the gaps to make sure it flows properly. In the pic you can see when I was about a 3rd of the way through repairing it.
