No New Land Cruisers in the UK

Agree with that Grimbo, the last forever bit we've discovered Toyota didn't make provision in their design to account for countries with a road salt fetish, mechanically they're pretty good albeit injectors still appear to be made of cheese, the lack of protection of the undersides at...

No New Land Cruisers in the UK

Just a thought, are we here all dinosaurs? The rest of the motoring public seem to want to 'rent' their vehicles for 3 years and hand them back, no one else apparently apart from us expects 20+ years of reliable trouble free service from a vehicle, mind you we expect to maintain it properly...

    Chassis question

The pic of the rear wheel/chassis, the wheelarch looks to me like someone applied waxoyl or similar at one time and its doing what it always does flaking off, id remove any loose stuff because it makes excellent water and salt traps. Chassis from what can be seen looks ok to me too, one of the...

No New Land Cruisers in the UK

I had a poke nose at Hilux when i was at Toyota couple of weeks ago, prices are ridiculous but then so are Corollas, seeing those prices gave me the push to get on with this year's rustproofing of the existing fleet.

Starting Sill replacement - anyone got pics of sills removed

While doing the job, i wouldn't bother with new step brackets, always thought bolting steps to the bodyshell was a daft idea anyway. Instead maybe fashion some brackets up that use the strength of the chassis, similar to how rock sliders are attached but needn't be quite so heavy duty.

Who is doing what maintenance today?

As some of you know, cleaned out the EGR valve earlier in the week. Painted the welds and seams of the new exhaust with Zinc paint yesterday, as luck would have it all the prop nipples lined up nicely whilst on the ramps so they've had a good greasing. Then today another coat of Bilt Hambers...

    Serious failure on emissions.

Never heard of it before Stumog, i'll have a peruse. Have you been a user yourself? Forte never made a scrap of difference to the emissions at MOT time, though with the EGR/inlet down to maybe 60% of bore don't suppose it would.

    Serious failure on emissions.

Mrs has driven it, not myself yet, she says its running nice which it is. I never mentioned to her about the instant stop on shutdown. but she did say about it so its obviously quite noticeable. The engine sounds slightly different, a deeper note if that makes sense and the turbo whine more...

    Serious failure on emissions.

Ah techstream, er yeah. Have it alright, its on an old Windows 10 laptop which we can't presently find, hopefully it'll turn up in due course and will link it up and see. Haven't driven it yet, but an interesting thing is that before doing this if i floored the throttle as if on an MOT test...

    Serious failure on emissions.

No luckily, at first i couldn't see it and assumed the worse, thankfully it was lodged on the exhaust down pipe. Forgot to mention, took a while to drill the butterfly flap out. Will have it up on the ramps later in the week if the weather holds, paint the new exhaust in zinc paint and slap...

    Serious failure on emissions.

Well, thats the EGR valve body cleaned, also the reachable parts of the inl;et manifold. Decided against removing the manifold because don't want to disturb injector pipes unless i'm goiing to change the injectors themselves, ditto the reason i didn't fit the blanking plate with specific hole...

    Trottle body/butterfly removal.

I'm refitting the EGR to mine today, am also wondering whether to remove the butterfly valve and your question about baffles further down the intake has me wondering if i should have the inlet manifold off too, didn't really want to but wondering now. In theory how would the butterfly valve...

Cheers lads, yes i've read Tony's posts here and elsewhere about the catch can and other modifications. Just umming and arring at the moment wondering what to do for the future, mine's done 116k and the build up was worse than yours Karl, good points about dry/wet situation, lots to think...

    Serious failure on emissions.

Righto, MOT passed a few weeks ago, thankfully i have next week off so chance at last to get some jobs done without being under time pressure. Today i've had the EGR valve out and cleaned it and the opening to the inlet manifold, EGR was as expected filthy, will put it back together tomorrow...

    Tips for MPG Improvement?

Maybe some of the more advanced system are better, but otherwise no is what i've found. Hit cruise and the vehicle gets large throttle inputs to resume speed, some hgv drivers who work for large operators which have spent £££££ on telematics use cruise to attain maximum acceleration without...

    Tips for MPG Improvement?

As above, with these boxy vehicles anything much above 60mph and you're starting to shift tons of air, plus the steepening resistance of tyre and transmission friction, massive transmissions to drag around on a Cruiser, that's quite true about using the lorry lane, slip streaming trucks if done...

    Serious failure on emissions.

Yes, going to let them fit the exhaust next week and i'll take it elsewhere for the MOT. Lesson learned, they're a handy garage that also have a tyre and exhaust bay but won't take anything in for MOT there again. Had a quote from MIJ at Walsall for a stainless exhaust custom made and fitted...

    Serious failure on emissions.

Much obliged Karl. I'll get the garage to fit the new exhaust as arranged but another MOT station would appear to be the answer, don't want to get into0any argy bargy with where i usually go because their general car work for all our family is good.

    Serious failure on emissions.

Hmm might be worth another MOT station then, i seem to recall the limit being 3 when i first had the vehicle.

    Serious failure on emissions.

Thats a bind the 120 has just failed on emissions, circa 2.7 with a 1.2 limit. Its also got an exhaust leak so that needs doing whatever. Ran some Forte through the system and been giving it some beans for a few weeks to clean the crud out, which obviously hasn't done the trick. Have been...

    120/150

Subarus which have similar full time AWD systems drink like a fish, we couldn't justify the XT Forester if it wasn't for LPG, its a 2.5 petrol turbo auto and won't better 30ish on a run, general knocking about its about the same fuel figures as the 120, though considerably quicker. Our 2007...

    120/150

Doesn't the FJ have similar transmission to Hilux of the time (and indeed 70 series), ie RWD for normal driving with selectable 4WD, this must make for more economic on road driving unlike the 120/150 in which the front axle is permanently driven. I'm in two minds about the benefits of part...

    120/150

WTF, 10k miles for a set of injectors to last on a new 150 is ridiculous. 120s in really good nick must be getting rare now, i keep being badgered to sell ours by several people, ex mechanic at work asked for first refusal a long time ago, their fairly new Jeep (our Toyota not intended to...

Changed oil plus fuel filter in the last two weeks, MOT next week so today its wheels off brake service and a general checkover and grease the props, probably paint the year old front calipers whilst down there. Rattle gun charging up as i type. Getting too near to 70 now for my liking, getting...

    LC 300 Oil Consumption

All Diesel engines use a certain amount of oil, those who think they never use a drop between oil changes might have a nasty discovery if they had an oil analysis done to tell them what percentage of fuel comprises the oil after 10k miles. Some DPF equipped car Diesels have well known issues...

    Where did the Adblue go?

In the drivers manual for MAN trucks, it mentions not to keep topping the adblu up every fill up (many companies with own fuel pumps require fuel and adblu topped up after each run), the manual says that keep topping up only a few litres at a time can lead to the system not registering adblu...

    Who needs or wants electric?.......

Another old git here, not following the trend of the day. So why has Toyota not leased the new 70 series in the EU (Please read)

That import place at Blakelands Milton Keynes had a really tasty ex Dubai Troopy V8 in about 6 weeks ago, i was tipping just opposite their place and spent an hour drooling over it. They get all sorts of weird and wonderful imports there, not even sure of the name of the company, if you search...

    Cracked windscreen

Truck didn’t start this morning - batteries

I bought the NOCO 10 jobbie, does exactly what it say on the tin, tops up batteries quickly and glows and you can tell from the progrssive leds the state of charging and when fully charged. Tried it on my Jumpstart3000 old school jump pack, before charging and 'repairing' with the NOCO the...

    Sad day, Don't hate me

A veritable fleet Karl. Have that same straight 6 in the W124, confess i prefer the saloon and estates myself, coupe and topless wheelbase is quite a bit shorter than saloon/estate making the rear seats almost useless, plus the lower roofline has anyone tall sitting with their head at angle to...

    Sad day, Don't hate me

Mercs from the 90s were a gamble, some rusted before your very eyes others seemed immune to the stuff. Daren't add up what we've spent on the W124 Coupe 320 we've had for coming up to 20 years, we've had 4 x W124s, the best of the bunch was the fairly low spec E300 Diesel with the 3 litre...

    Sad day, Don't hate me

My plan before the present 120 spoke to me from the online ad, was to import a 120 Prado or possibly even a 70 of some sort direct from Japan but through a company experienced in this. Might a grey be something to consider, unless very unlucky starting with a vehicle of similar age to what could...

Truck didn’t start this morning - batteries

Exactly right Karl, by the time i realised the CTEK had died the battery was toast, the Lidl's jobbies wouldn't revive and of course my old Absar jobbie wasn't designed to kick start or desulfate, bloody big 4 year warranty Varta. Thank for the NOCO endorsement, been an expensive weekend so...

Truck didn’t start this morning - batteries

NOCO Genius5UK is on offer at Amazon at the moment @ £67, might be worth a poke nose. I've had a CTEK before, which died during one winter and cost me a 12 month old battery on my old Merc sorned at the time, and had several of the Lidl chargers which have all packed up, won't be buying either...

ebay number 404117038099 2013 3.0 litre LC4 150 series, circa 69k miles @£15750. Is this right cos its seems cheap to me, too good to be true or have prices peaked and dropping?

this thread has triggered a memory. Back in the 80's trucks in the UK still suffered with fuel waxing issues, in the 70's when i started driving artics it was a real problem. My truck in the 80's was fitted with a, ''fuel line heater'' an electrical wire wrapped around the fuel pipe that ran...

    Well, an update.
