    Speedo change

I have shipped my vehicle 4 times now (in a container) and the shipper has always strapped the vehicle down, 2 straps to the front and 2 at the rear, including chocks to all wheels nailed to the floor. They also take photos of it tied down in the container.

    New 80 owner from Devon

Hi Richard, I've had my 80 for 8 years for overland travel having done 110k miles so far, it is not used as a every day trasport and this certainly helps with the fight against rust. I have had the roof removed and a pop up roof tent fitted. On the inside the rear seats have been removed and...

Getting solar and power cables into your truck - best routes

Hi Simon, If you clean the area before you drill the hole then carefully paint the hole edges, it should stop any rust starting. I ran 25mm power cables under the body and drilled 2 holes through the floor in the area where the rear seats are. I painted the holes and after fitting the cables(run...

    New 80 owner from Devon

Hi Richard, Same color scheme as mine, though I went for a diesel. I also had slow windows and seems to be fairly common problem. Due to the age of the vehicle the rubbers seem to harden, cleaning and sparying silicone into the guides helped but replacing the rubbers is best solution. Try...

    30 MPG from an 80 ?

Never really checked it. Prior to the Russian trip, I had done trips across the Sahara and driving in sand seemed pointless checking the MPG. By the way, at the time in Egypt, the fuel cost were around 15pence a liter! The previous year it was 9p! Stephen

    30 MPG from an 80 ?

I Did 32000 miles on a run to Magadan, Sibiera, driving around most of the Stans up to 5000m. I would guess half that milage was on dirt roads and averaged just over 30 mpg. Just prior to that trip l took the vehicle to Diesel Bob,Ribchester, Lancashire to set up the pump as l had fitted a...

    Oil Pressure sensor

    Oil Pressure sensor

Yes, I did mean 1/8 NPT. Further research revealed difference between BSPT and NPT is that on a BSPT thread the angle across the flanks of thread (if you sliced the fitting in half long-ways and measured the angle from root to crest to root) is 55 degrees instead of 60 degrees as it is for NPT...

    Oil Pressure sensor

Can anyone confirm that the thread used on the oil pressure sensor is 1/8NTP? I would like to check the oil pressure, since I last checked it, I have done 120K. I could not find the T piece I used last time, so I bought another one but it would not screw into the block! and was advertised as...

Where's the best place for LHD 80's

Hi Denboy, The HZ with turbo does have issues due the fact that the engine was never designed to work with a turbo. If you fit a 'tropical' radiator and make sure there is nothing interfering with the air flow to the radiator, eg spotlamps, number plate etc, additionally have temperature sensor...

    Gearbox re-build

Used a breaker bar and they came out and none had threadlock on them. The oil seal was showing signs of weaping so after a bit of fiddling about removed it and fitted a SKF 'Double Lip Viton Rubber Rotary Shaft Seal' for £29. Hopefully I should'nt be visiting this area for a long time.

    Lockers not working

Hi Ginna In my experience with flashing diff lock lights, I found the locks were actually working, it was the signal from the respective diff switch was not getting back to the diff lock ecu. Chipped Front Wheel Bearing

I would agree if I was using thread lock but I was using a bearing lock which is designed for this particular situation. It may be more difficult as it could damage the dust seal on the inside if the bearing 'sticks' too well when removing, though I always change the dust seal when rebuilding...

    Chipped Front Wheel Bearing

The bearings are a hand push fit and I use bearing lock to reduce the chance of the race spinning on the spindle. Actually, thinking about it, I think this might be original as all the others are now SKF and are still ok. I think the most likeliest reason was due to being caught out and unable to miss a pothole or 'private' sleeping policeman. In Central America a lot of these countries have sleeping...
