12 volt starting conversion on a 1997 24 valve manual 80 series LandCruiser

It does look good but I have seen a HDJ 100 sold for our HDJ 80 and they are not right, incidentally they mention it fits the 100 as well, so as per Hopeless Wanderer's comment and send them a mail. Unsure about the 100 in OZ but the UK one does not bolt straight in. I used the 3 kw unit in mine and had to swap the drive dog and modify the front housing.

Done it about five years back now, and still works great.

Something to bear in mind is that some have 5 teeth and some have 6 on the starter. Both work fine but the 5 tooth strips after a few years- not good!!

UK supplier, try Robson and Francis, speak to Mike Robson. It won't be NZ prices but will have UK warranty and the back up of a UK specialist.

My 24v replacement has been on my truck for about 9 years now without fault.

Mike is usually picking up and dropping off on Fridays and Monday's so you may get to speak to Devon on these days.

I thought they had 12 teeth?

You could be right Bat. I can't remember it's a long time ago but there is a difference in the teeth. I thought it was 5 and 6. 12 sounds a bit many for a starter pinion to me but I could be mistaken. Anyhow, it's still a good idea to check the number of teeth whatever.

After five years I have finally bought the correct starter, definitely 12 teeth. As per my previous post , the HDJ 100 starter is 12 volts but the pinion is smaller, this may have perhaps 11 teeth that StarCruiser is thinking of? I have pictures somewhere.

Fair enough Dave, my memory is crap these days. There is one tooth different anyway so 11 and 12 it will be. All I know is I had the wrong one supplied when I set fire to my original and I had to change the pinion when it jumped. It sounded different from the start but lasted about 6 years I think.

Dave, did you go for the same one Gary (Garfieldus) fitted, or did you fine one elsewhere?

Yep checked back, I had the 12 volt 3kw from a HDJ 100, it has 11 teeth and the dog is physically smaller. I found the info here, it is a great reminder for ageing grey matter that I too suffer from. :D

I am unsure where he sourced his again memory fog. I think his was from Aus ebay? Mine was too, a company called 'Auto 8'? When it arrived and after fighting through the new 'easy 5 step' system (read 24 steps!) Spain has put in place for purchases NOT from an EU country just to discourage us from wandering afar you understand. I was amused to see it is in fact a brand new Bosch unit, it could probably be purchased nearer home and a hell of a lot cheaper, not necessarily the unit but perhaps save on the ridiculous shipping and import duties

Have you got the boschool number by any chance

There's a good chance Robsons could source one but I know it's a bit of a minefield. A part number would be ideal.

I still have the box mine came in, in the garage. Dunno if there are any useful numbers on it. I'll have a look.

The box mine came in has the following information:

Bosch
BXD042N
12 V 2.5 KW
F 042 000 079 - HC5

Of note, there is a test sheet inside for the starter, mine made 2.8kw, not much short of the 3kw I took out.

Wait until Chris comes back with his numbers and compare them, and hopefully be able to purchase or order one in the UK.

Hope that helps?

Edited my last post with contact details for Robson and Francis.

Thanks Gary, this one is high up on my jobs to do list.

Did yours perform okay in the cold winter days, not that we have had a cold winter recently.

Sorry guys, nothing of any use on the box at all. I got mine from Wood Auto. It does have 12 teeth though.

Paul, the starting on the 12v is no different to that of the 24v. You cannot tell come hail, snow rain or shine. There are Cruisers out there with the 4.2 that only ever came with 12v start. Frankly the 24v system is unnecessary, unnecessarily complicated and one of the few systems on the vehicle that can let you down. I had mine up in Scotland last year where it was -9. Never even thought about it when I turned the key from cold. It's incredible that such a big engine takes so little starting.

The Wood Auto starter as fitted by Jon W (and Chris..?) has been superceded by STR70230. These are in stock and cost £212
