2.4 EFI Diesel Fuel consumption

G

Hi All
I have a 1990 Prado EX5 (import) with a 2.4 TD Diesel engine. It is
automatic. I was surprised to notice that I can only do about 500
kilometres per tank, and it ain't a small tank either (75l?).
Is this normal?
You LC 80 drivers, what's your fuel consumption like? I wouldn't be
surprised if, even with the bigger engines, your fuel consumption is
lower.
Cheers
Jake

Jake
My most recent tankful (~82 litres) gave me 528 miles / 29 mpg, and that included our x-country jaunt on Salisbury plain.
Lots of short journeys + 70mph motorway cruise tends to bring this down to 27mpg, the best I've ever had is 31mpg.
Standard vehicle, 4.2 litre, 24 valve, manual gearbox, fairly light right foot.
500 km / 75l = 18.9 mpg: sounds like there;s something wrong somewhere.

My 80 with a 1HD-T is only doing around 18-19mpg at the moment, but
need to get the injectors and pump serviced/replaced (all other options
having been explored).
You average 80 with an auto box and a 1HD-T should be doing in the
region of 24-25mpg - slightly better if manual.
I have not seen any figures relating to the Prado engine, but would
have thought it would be slightly better than what you are getting.
Does it smoke at all?
Are the air and fuel filters regularly changed?

Hi Jake
I drive a 92 80 series auto and I manage to get 6 miles to the litre about
9.6 km. So for a tank of 750 litres I would get about 720km. The 80s hold
about 95 litres of fuel.

That's good!
I have a 1HDT but I'm now wondering if there's something wrong with
mine. The only time I've ever seen 29 mpg levels is pure motorway
crusing at 65 mph all day.
What should I look at - the only thing I can think of is if my injector
timing is out. I have quite low mileage of 50,000. It's a Jap import but
from a Toy dealer in Tokyo so would have thought the stated mileage on
the papers was correct. Was certainly in top condition body and chassis.

Remember I've got the 24valve engine (1HD-FT) whereas yours is 12 valve (1HD-T). Also I have ordinary tyres, and no roofrack / bullbar / winch / trendy bits & bobs - which all helps.
Anecdotally the 24v engine is about 2 mpg better than the 12v, so I don't think you've got anything to worry about. The biggest mpg improvement improvement I got from mine was when I installed a new air filter!

Hi Ian,
I really shouldn't worry - Chris' 80 is a manual with a 1HD-FT so will
always be a lot more efficient than yours (I am guessing you have an
Auto).
If any of you are concerned about the consumption, the route that I
have recently taken with my 80 was:
Replacing air and fuel filters.
Checking the amount of smoke out the back - if you have poor
consumption and a lot of smoke it could be down to a lot of things, but
one thing you can do is adjust the fuelling via a screw at the back of
the pump on 1HD-T.
Check the turbo pressure to make sure it performing OK.
Check the turbo by pass actuator - for this and the above you need a
pressure gauge capable of going up to 10-15psi
Check the timing - fiddly to check, need a special service tool, seldom
needs adjusting, although was out on mine.
Get the injectors checked - if you can take them out yourself many
places will check them for free or for a small fee.
Get the pump checked - a pain to get out and expensive to check - once
out might as well get is serviced - I have read some stories of new low
sulphur diesel affecting the old rubber seals, so worth getting them
replaced.
I have most of the kit for the above if anyone needs any help with it.
If all is OK on the engine and you want to try to improve the
consumption further consider the following:
Consider doing the standard injector pump tweaks as detailed on the
Lcool site:
http://www.lcool.org/technical/80_series/1hdft_pump_adj.html - many
also apply to the 1HD-T
Go for a larger diameter tyre like a 285/75 - helps on motorway
mileage, although affects acceleration.
Replace the exhaust with a larger diameter one (2.5-3") -
difficult/almost impossible to get off the shelf in the UK, but some of
the custom exhaust shops can make them up.
Fit an electric fuel pump down near the fuel tank to push fuel to the
pump, overcomes problems with injector pump starvation at higher revs
common on all 80s.
Fit an intercooler - provides a more efficient burn/more power, but if
you are not heavy footed can help consumption.
Alternatively you could get a cheap runaround as a daily drive!

Thanks. Maybe mine's ok then I have 275 all terrain tyres and a bull
bar. Also spare wheel on the back not that that should make much
difference there. My filters were changed 2000 miles ago so should be ok.
Thinking of injector timing how much do the dealers charge for this? Was
wondering if it's cheaper to buy the special adapter tool and dial guage?

Extra drag from a bull-bar - who knows? Probably < 3%, but that is still around 0.5 - 1.0 mpg.
Someone told me last month that it is more fuel-efficient to run the A/C in summer than to open a window, because the drag from the latter requires more bhp that the A/C pump. I don't know whether this is true or not, but a rough calculation suggests that it might be.
Julian would be a better person to ask about fuel pumps, etc. But if you find someone (a) competent, (b) honest and (c) not ruinously expensive who can service pump & injectors please post the info.
Talking of pumps: we've just had to have a new borehole pump for our house water supply - ?1050 by the time it was all done & dusted. OK we don't pay water rates, and it has lasted 15 years so I suppose it doesn't owe us anything, but it still hurts.

Hi Ian,
I don't know what dealers charge, but the tool is around ?40-50 and
reasonable dial gauges are probably around the same.
Where are you? You are welcome to borrow my kit if required.

Hi Ian,
Realistically, dial gauges are pretty handy for other jobs, but I
wouldn't spend money on the SST - you should only need it once to check
and possibly adjust - once set that is it unless you are removing the
pump.
Having said that, some on other lists have recommended using more
expensive kit that checks the timing whilst the engine is running,
which would be more accurate - if I didn't have the tool myself I would
try to find someone that could check it this way for me.
Where are you anyway? I know a pretty good injector firm in Swindon.
The best bet is talk to the parts guy at your local dealer and find out
who they use, you then at least stand a chance of finding someone that
has worked on an LC before.

Hi Julian
I had the Prado serviced recently (cost an arm and just about two
legs!) so I would assume they replaced the air filter.
It does not smoke at all.
Is replacing the air and fuel filter relatively diy-able for a pleb like me?
Cheers

Why have a mind if you can't change it?

Hi Jake,
Do you get any smoke at all, even under acceleration? With a well tuned
engine in good nick I would expect at least a little bit of smoke under
acceleration (well certainly with an 80) - if you get none at all you might be
under fuelled.
Should be. On most of the older LCs the air filter can be replaced by undoing
some clips and a small butterfly screw.
I'm not sure where the fuel filter is for your Prado - the LC has a canister
filter just before the fuel pump that is relatively easy to replace - I needed
a filter wrench to shift it initially, but after that it can be done by hand.
With the 80 the injector pump sucks the fuel from the tank, so if the fuel
filter is getting blocked, it can starve the pump of fuel so it isn't running
as efficiently as it should be - your Prado may be the same.

Hi Ian,
As I mentioned earlier, your best bet is to talk to the parts guy at
the local dealer and see who they use. I rang several from yellow
pages and none of them had experience of LCs and most of them worked on
the basis of 'bring the vehicle in and we will look at it for vast
???'.
I only found one that would be prepared to test the injectors for ?1.50
each, however he wasn't that friendly/helpful.
Eventually spoke to parts guy in Toyota dealer in Swindon and he put me
on to a local company who have been extremely helpful - I have had
several long chats with one chap there slowly working through timing
and fuelling issues. When I take the injectors out he will check them
for free whilst I wait.
